Otto's blue and yellow classic bedroom update

I did not find decorating for a seven-year-old boy to be particularly easy or fun, but I’m excited that I finally have finished Otto's bedroom after more than a year of picking some upgraded, non-toddler, still not big boy, things! And this room features a lot of special touches, including a watercolor of us at the coast and some pieces he chose himself!

Otto's nursery and toddler room were a lot more minimal and modern than a lot of this house. Something about having a baby in 2018 when you have very little money I guess. So I was excited to start replacing some things in his room with more timeless pieces. The first thing I changed was the rug, to a jute one. Obviously replaced the crib with a bed, but then decided we needed a bunkbed for the hot days is when Lucy also sleeps in here, so found this adorable colonial inspired bunkbed in this pretty blue color.

Bedroom updates, and affordable custom trimmed curtains

After many years of subpar window treatments in my bedroom… I finally cracked the code! I had been using slightly-too-short standard 84" Target curtains, pretty good blackout, but just the hidden tab top, because I knew they would be quiet for opening and closing while the kids were sleeping nearby. But I really wanted the elegant look of pinch pleat curtains on rings. Well, I figured it out!

The solution: layered Roman shade and curtains. I got this beautiful woven Roman shade from Twopages, with a super thorough blackout lining, and I mounted it outside the window to block the light around the cracks and allow all the light I can through the window when the shade is open. This thing is so powerful, but all I need is the shade closed for a seriously effective blackout (and it’s silent when I open and close it).

Strawberry floral and gingham little girl room!

Four years ago we finished Lucy's nursery in the "pointy room" upstairs. This house has four bedrooms with closets plus this room and the basement, which sounds like a lot but nothing is perfectly laid out for traditional family living (e.g. all bedrooms on the same floor, or kids upstairs and primary suite downstairs)... and this room is only accessible through my bedroom! Won't always work, but for now (she's four and I'm single), it works great.

I've made a few updates over time (like these pegs for hanging clothes instead of a closet), but she slept in the crib until recently. (It was great. She never tried to climb out, either!) But this summer I found a charming vintage (c. 2002) daybed on Facebook and repainted it, and just now I finally found the perfect bedding and accessories. "Big girl" room complete!

Charming preppy guest room/office reveal! And sources

This guest room was my most recent room makeover project last summer, finished just before our house was on the old house TV show. But then last February, I was relaxing in a hot tub in Scottsdale and scrolling Instagram, and saw an image that I just loved so much, and felt so much more true to my style than how I had been decorating the past few years! I am leaning into my preppy side. With the creative juices flowing from the relaxation state of that vacation, I became inspired to put up some blue and white wallpaper in this sun-filled guest room that I also use as my office. It’s taken quite a few months to get all the elements in place but it’s finally done and I’m so happy with it!

This is a really great room because it has south and west-facing windows, so lots of light particularly in the afternoon. I love it for my office for that reason! But it’s also just beautiful as a peaceful bed to look at as I passed by in the hall. And, we’ve used it to sleep in when it’s too hot upstairs! The blue and white Rifle Paper Co. paper wallpaper was obviously the anchor, but since it is a little cleaner/fresher/preppier then I've done the past few years. It took me a lot of head-scratching to find the rest of the pieces.

Updates to the pink bedroom (with sources)

Last fall I painted my bedroom a light peachy paint color I concocted myself out of some samples and then had color matched. I had been thinking of doing this for a couple years, but ended up actually doing it around the time my divorce was final (not intentionally a girly single woman choice, but it works!). I was bored of the white (see that version here), but it was also comfortable/I was used to it. Adding color can be scary and sometimes it takes a while to get used to it. I was really not too sure about this color at first but I’ve made a few changes around the room, and now I just love it and it feels so right!

I painted my bedroom pink!

I've been wishing for some updates for my bedroom for quite a while now. I felt too lazy to paint but the white walls were getting reeeeally boring. I redid this room from 2021-2022 and called it done here. It was fine, but minimal (just, with antiques). Since that reveal I've gone through a separation and then divorce and now the room is solely mine, so all the more reason for a feminine update!

I'm still working on some big changes in here, but I debated so much over the paint color and ended up mixing it myself and getting it color matched, so wanted to document that here at least! And you can see what a change paint and 2 hours of work on a Sunday did.

Pale peachy pink bedroom makeover

I wanted a pink, except those all felt too pink or blue, but a peach felt too 90's. I wanted really pale, though. Adding color to walls is still relatively new to me (my past few room projects have involved colored walls, but always smaller rooms!) and lighter felt more versatile. I got some muddy pink paint cards and chose two and got sample pots at 50% strength. They were still way more saturated than I wanted! I added white paint I had and played around. I added some warm yellow-brown to the pinks (and more white) and made my own color!

Downstairs guest room/office REVEAL!

Another room done! I haven't had a guest room in years so this one feels very luxurious (even though it doubles as my work from home office squeezed onto one wall). We've had a few room shuffles since we finished the basement, then Jason moved out, then etc. other changes, but things are getting cleaned up and I have this whole glorious, light-filled room on the main floor to decorate and use.

How to recover a curved, nailhead headboard - tutorial!

I wanted a really unique, cool headboard for my One Room Challenge guest room but I wasn't prepared for a full-on from-scratch plywood etc. DIY headboard. I found a curved headboard with nailhead trim (not my favorite) for $10 on Facebook Marketplace and recovered it with a beautiful fabric, and found a great solution for covering up the nailhead trim. I didn't even have to remove it! Easy tutorial here!

You will need:

Headboard
Fabric (plan to run the fabric vertically, so enough for the width and height of the headboard plus 6"+ on each side--I had to use two widths of my 53" wide fabric for my full/queen headboard)
Optional/if your headboard is dark and your fabric is light: white spray paint
Spray adhesive
Staple gun and staples
High heat hot glue gun and glue
Piping cord (or, I used macrame cord since I liked the size better)
Zipper foot

Or, for simpler/no sewing, contrast trim!

1. Measure out and dry fit the fabric. I had to piece mine so I chose how I wanted to center the pattern on the headboard.

Moody English-inspired basement guest bedroom REVEAL! + costs and sources

Hooray, my One Room Challenge is done! I 100% did not have time or capacity to do this project (hence the lack of blog posts long the way, unlike how I've done my previous ORCs) but I have to say it turned out great and I'm so glad I did it!!

This room is part of my big basement renovation which unfortunately is still not 100% done--though now this room is, as is the bathroom right next to it (my spring One Room Challenge--reveal here). Most of the work in this room was done earlier this year, and a lot of it by the electrician, drywall team, etc. who did the rest of the basement, but still--huge transformation!

English-inspired guest room makeover, week 1 One Room Challenge!

I need a kick in the pants to wrap up this big basement renovation project, so here goes--my 117th (kidding) One Room Challenge. (See all my others here.) We started turning this little extra room into a guest room months ago and stopped, and... now it's just sad. But I have plans for a beautiful, richly colored, vintage-ey English country-inspired room and here I go!

The before(s)

This room has been through a lot. Here's its recent history, from 70's/80's home office to newly framed tiny bonus room. There's no closet since it wasn't intended to be a bedroom (hence why we didn't add an egress window), and it's really very small. A full size bed is as big as you'd want to go! I was thinking it would be a nice office, too, or music room or small playroom... but then we decided we wanted it to be a guest room, and I love decorating bedrooms so that was the most fun option anyway.

Our bedroom REVEAL!

Well... I'm calling our bedroom done. We might redo it this spring but I realized it's already pretty complete! I still like a lot of things about it, had to document it here!

It's definitely a modern traditional vibe, plus the charm of our historic home's attic level sloped ceilings and a few funky vintage touches. With a couple last-minute colorful additions, I'm really enjoying it!

10 favorite FREE download tree art pieces

There are so many great options out there these days for art!! Lots of print shops, DIY art ideas, and museums providing free downloads. It's overwhelming. I actually got a request from an Instagram follower for a collection of my favorite pieces of tree art, and I thought... yes! I do have a list!

Her request came after I shared this fabulous large art I just got for our bedroom. It's a print of an etching done by Bertha Jaques in 1937, and it's available for download (Cabin in Wilderness | Smithsonian American Art Museum). See below...

To be honest, this size and framing was inspired by a pair of art prints available for around $400 each at a designer's shop. I don't know the history of those ones, but I love this print itself and I love online custom framing. I had this one printed at Art to Frames and it was under $100! It's about 19"x30" (custom size, due to the nonstandard size of the original art piece) and was $96 for this framing job (Black on Red Oak frame, 1" mat). I've used Art to Frames many times before and I love this frame--solid wood, nice and narrow, really versatile. And I love that I could customize the mat--I wanted a little mat, but also not to take over the framing of the piece.

How to layer vintage rugs in a bedroom! I'm obsessed!

I've been working on our bedroom the past few months since we moved our bedrooms around and moved upstairs. We're in a large square room with sloped, low ceilings (7' at the highest) and one window. (You can see my posts about it in my recent bedroom posts.) We upgraded to a king-sized bed and got a nice big 9'x12' rug to fill the room a little better, but it's been feeling kind of plain. Even with the fun pattern and color I've added with the DIY fabric-covered sconce shades and dyed curtains.

I thought about it, and I'm so glad I tried it... turns out layering a smaller vintage rug over our jute one was a great solution to adding interest, and I LOVE it!! I'm sharing my top tips for how to layer rugs in a bedroom below, too!

I went with another neutral colored rug on top of our jute patterned one. I'm dipping a toe into decorating with more color and pattern... this time I went with pattern.

Easy DIY fabric covered lampshades (and the block print sconce shades I love!)

I am really pumped about this project!!! After my successful spray adhesive/Indian block print cotton DIY Roman shade, I knew I could do this... it was even easier. I covered the shades of the sconces by our bed with a beautiful patterned cotton for a totally unique look!

Funnily, this is not the first time I've done this... in 2013 I did basically the same method on a thrifted lampshade and shared about it here, though I didn't show any step-by-step photos. Ha! This project is much cooler, anyway!

You will need:

Lampshade(s) (I used the ones that came with these sconces)
Lightweight fabric (I used this Indian block print cotton, very lightweight)
Spray adhesive
Tacky Glue or other crafty glue

That's it! Really short list! I did this outside with a helpful toddler playing in the mud and sand around me... not recommended. But it's nice to do it outside for ventilation and not getting spray adhesive mist on anything.

DIY pinch pleated curtain dyeing tutorial!

I am really having fun with our bedroom decor now!! I just did a possibly risky, but actually very low-risk, project and dyed our curtains to turn them from the plain beige cotton IKEA ones I got many years ago to a beautiful rich green, and added pinch pleat tape and hooks for a more high-end look!

I'd been considering doing something like this as a way to bring in more color and then one of my friends on Instagram @ciarakenaston did the same thing, a very similar green, for her living room and they look great! She reminded me that Rit has a bunch of formulas on their website so you can choose from any number of colors and they tell you, for the size of item you're dyeing, how many bottles or cups of each color of dye you need to get the exact color you want!

The soft color and extra width from the pleating even when closed really add a lot to our room!

Plaid wool blanket throw pillow DIY and long lumbar

It's been a loooong, long time since I did an "upcycle" of a vintage or older garment/home decor piece into something new. That used to be half my posts, back when this was a sewing blog! But I didn't need more and more homemade stuff all the time, and my style changed, and I have way less time for sewing now. But, back to my roots! I recently rename a vintage wool plaid throw blanket into three, unique throw pillows and I LOVE them!

Oh, but not only that--I also made a custom down-filled extra long lumbar pillow using fill from two old pillows we had. It was very messy, but so cool!

Target hack: high-end black and brass nightstand

I'm working on our bedroom now that we've moved upstairs, and going piece by piece. Now that we have a king-sized bed and more traditional padded headboard than we had in our downstairs/previous bedroom, I wanted larger, slightly grander nightstands. My top choices were waaaaay out of my budget, so I made something similar for way less!

Here's a look at the pretty brass and black nightstands I admired. They all have black hardware, and a nontraditional layout of drawers and maybe a shelf or two. I think this was my fave--$640 each.

See that cute $160 alternative there? Target nightstand, not quite as wide as some of the pricier ones unfortunately, but I really love the shape and knew it could look more like the others with contrasting hardware.

One of the knobs is teeny-tiny. I'm sure it's possible to find hardware that size but I had some of this nicer gold spray paint and voila, added a couple of light coats to the ones the nightstands came with. They really don't get that much wear so I think it should hold up pretty well. If not, I'll hunt for little brass knobs that match more standard size ones for the drawers.

I'm sure it's not the quality of the $1,950 ones!!, but it is solid wood, and we only need one drawer of this size anyway. In a larger room, with a king sized bed, I think wider nightstands would be great, but for us for now this is just fine and leaves some nice white space on either side.

There is still SO much I have planned for this room (even since taking these photos I've already added sconces) but having the nightstands and bed locked down is great progress!

Late summer bedroom update and getting our room ready to share with a newborn!

I looooove bedroom decor and shopping for bedding. I'm very happy with the bones of our bedroom (we redid it in the fall 2018 One Room Challenge) but I love to update the bedding, art, plants, etc. regularly/as the seasons change! Plus, with baby girl arriving this month I knew we'd need to move a few things around to make room for not only the bassinet but also a few other things I found essential in the newborn phase with Otto.

Updated midcentury modern guest bedroom reveal! One Room Challenge Week 8

It's One Room Challenge reveal day!! Along with many other designers, I've been working the past 8 weeks on transforming one room. This event happens twice a year, and I've participated several times. This time I made over a guest room, with a midcentury modern plus updated traditional vibe, and I'm so happy with it!!!

I have a 2-year-old and baby on the way, but my husband and I have done almost all of the work on our homes ourselves! Updated Midcentury Modern Guest Bedroom

You can read all about the history of this room, including before photos, here. It belongs to my friends Gabriela and Matt, who host a lot of out-of-town guests and wanted to give them a more finished-feeling space (more functional, too). Their home was built in 1961 and they love midcentury modern style, but a lot of the inspirations they pulled for this room had warm and earthy tones, softer textures, and some more contemporary style. I combined their favorite elements and helped them choose everything for this room--we started completely from scratch!!
