DIY & home decor blogging - behind the scenes!

I used to share blogging tips, like YEARS ago... things have changed! This week I'm sharing my experience and not just tips--how home decor/DIY bloggers create blog and social media content, how to get featured on a big design site, how home bloggers make money, how bloggers trick you with Instagram’s multiple image swipe feature.. (kidding!)...

Ashley and I are both sharing how we got started and how we do it now, on this week's episode of the Your Home Story podcast!

Little blogging tips Part 6

Part 6 of my loosely ongoing series of little blogging tips! One hobbyist blogger to others. Hope you enjoy these and get a little blogging inspiration!

Suzannah's blogging tip #16: Use the free blogging tools that are available to you--today's example, comment moderation systems like Disqus. I really appreciate how easy it is to use Blogger, and even WordPress, but let's face it--their default comment systems are not very good. If someone comments on a post asking a question, I can reply using Blogger's (relatively new) "threaded comment" layout, but the user doesn't get any kind of notification that I've replied. So they'd have to remember to check back to the original post! Not very helpful. I'd seen comment systems like Disqus on bigger blogs but hadn't realized until recently that I could use them, too! Disqus was easy to install and I love how simple it is to use. I hope you all (any of you who've asked questions in the comments to a post, anyway!) appreciate getting a notification when I reply!

Suzannah's blogging tip #17: Blog consistently--doesn't have to be every day, or 4 times a week or anything, just pick a schedule you can stick to and then stick to it. My husband has been blogging at his blog, Grassfed Geek, pretty regularly and I'm so proud of him, but he's still getting used to thinking about having an editorial calendar. His goal now is to blog twice a week, something he can fit into his schedule manage-ably and without too much stress (although it's still sometimes hard for him to remember to jot down post ideas and thoughts!). (Update: He's mostly stopped blogging for now. Bad example!! Haha.) Maybe later, you can blog more frequently, or with more in-depth posts, but if your goal is to have a bigger or fancier blog someday, you've got to start off with a piece you can chew on now so you can learn those skills for later!
My blogging view from last weekend--editing pics on one screen and watching movies on the other!

Suzannah's blogging tip #18: Hyperlinks. Put them in your posts when you talk about brands, organizations, other blogs, even new concepts (link to a Wikipedia page or other good source). A blog post with links is so much less static, more interactive, more engaging, than simply a post of plain text and maybe some photos. Reach out to the world with your posts, and encourage your readers to learn with you!

Helping my hubby out with his blog has got me thinking about some of these recent blogging tips. What have you been ruminating on lately?? Learn anything new, like I did with Disqus??! Any other comment systems work better for you?! (Always learning!)

Happy weekend!!

Little blogging tips part 5, and a shout-out!

It's been a while since I shared my top blogging tips, but here I go again, this time with a couple of technical points and then an important social and, uh, philosophical? suggestion.

Suzannah's blogging tip #13: Simple: make your photos all the same width.

It's so funny, this is like, a common tip nowadays, but when I first started my blog I paid no mind to photo widths. In fact, I'm embarrassed to admit, I used to make my photos "Large" instead of "X-Large" because my post column width wasn't quite wide enough for the X-Large. I also always used 4x6 photos, a mix of vertical and horizontal, and they look totally choppy and staggered as you scroll down the post. Ugh!

See? Yes:

No!:

There are lots of ways to standardize your picture widths: in Picasa, Photoshop/Lightroom, or PicMonkey or whatever you use, and export to the right width/dimensions (I recommend 640px wide for typical blog layouts). You can do it in the post with a larger photo, but it may make your blog slower to load--to resize in the post, resize manually in the HTML or use Windows Live Writer to write your posts in preview mode. To resize your images manually: in the post editor, make the photo "Original size," then edit the HTML of the post and add

width="640" height="960"

or whatever the dimensions (make sure you use the right numbers to keep the dimensions). A 4"x6" photo is 640px x 960px, and a 3"x4" photo is 640px x 853px, for example.

Ideally, make your photos the same width as your posts. You can easily change your post column width in Blogger > Template > Customize > Adjust widths, and I'm sure on other hosts, too. Find a blog width that works for you and on most monitors, and stick with it--and make your photos match!

Suzannah's blogging tip #14: Make a stat tracker for each month.

We talk a lot in blogging about your "stats"--that is, the important figures that measure the size and reach of your blog. Often this is your monthly pageviews (tracked by Google Analytics, easily installed on any blog or website), followers (via a variety of tools--Google Reader, Facebook, Twitter, BlogLovin, etc.), and more. If you have a goal of growing your blog and influencing more people, for whatever reason--maybe you want to attract sponsors, gain credibility, do collaborations...--then your stats are likely very important to you.

I only just recently recognized one really easy way to keep track of blog growth and strength: aside from checking your stats regularly (in Google Analytics and on your networks), make note of your figures on a regular basis. That is, make a spreadsheet or a document or a piece of paper!, and every month at the same time, write down how many pageviews, visitors, etc. you get! Try making a column for each of the goals you have--pageviews, Twitter followers, whatever it is--and watch how your blog changes over time.

To see a great example of a stat tracker, you can check out and download the free set of blog planning materials from the most recent Portland Bloggers event about blog goal-setting.

Suzannah's blogging tip #15: Take it to the real world. Join a group of bloggers in your city, talk with a friend or two who also blog, or connect one-on-one with bloggers you know and admire in the blog world. Make personal connections with others who have something (important) in common with you: this crazy online world!

So, speaking of the Portland Bloggers, I'm very fortunate to have found this awesome group in my area. Every time I see these folks, I come away inspired and energized and more informed, too, and ready to tackle the next thing for my blog. The group's events are often informative, such as the photography workshop or SEO workshop, but are also social, and I've made some great friends by meeting other bloggers in person!

The last event was about our resolutions and goals for our blogs in 2013--what a great way to start off the year. Really got me thinking about all kinds of goals for this year! It's going to be an exciting one!

Those are my little bloggings tips this time around! Have anything to add??

Big deal little blogging tip: Want more comments?

Big deal little blogging tip: Want more comments?

So every once in a while I post blogging tips, which I always feel a little awkward about doing since I don't want to be presumptuous... but I've been doing this for three years now, and I read plenty of blogs, too, so I think I'm at least sort of qualified to share advice. So normally I post three blogging tips, but today I just want to reinforce one, and mention a couple new resources I've found.

Obviously if you want more comments, you'll want to post interesting, original posts that your readers want to engage with. Those will be different for every kind of blog. There are all kinds of advice on building that kind of content... but today's one blogging/getting more comments tip is simple.

My ONE tip for today, that's "kind of a big deal" (words of Ron Burgundy): If you want more comments, turn off the word verification. This one single thing can really, really help people be way more willing to comment!! It is so annoying to have to fill in the blank after interpreting the mystery words and numbers... and they're getting harder these days, I swear. I am way less likely to leave a comment if I think I'm going to fail the captcha or don't have the time to try it a couple times.

So please, PLEASE, right now, go CHECK your settings and make sure you have word verification turned off!! You may not even realize you have it on, but you could be losing important feedback and community-building comments by having that barrier! Here's some instructions on how to turn off the captcha in both old and new Blogger if you need it. And honestly--I have so few spam comments, the captcha is really not necessary for a blog like most of ours. I have mine set so I have to approve comments on posts older than 3 months, so I can click "publish" or "spam" on those when they come in, and spam is kinda more likely to be on older posts. But seriously, no worries, I'm sure you won't have a problem with spam without the word verification. Seriously.

First world problems, amIright....

Okay, but while we're talking about comments... I just found this site, SEOmoz, which has all kinds of cool and useful SEO advice I don't really understand. But I did see a simple article on getting more comments--written by the experts in search engine optimization! (And, if you couldn't guess... the first tip they mention is, make it as easy as possible to leave a comment!!!--AKA, turn off that tricky word verification if you have it on.)

Another great resource for blogging tips is not original at all, but the Alt Summit blog has a lot of advice I was just recently clicking through. Kinda wanna go all through the archives if I have time--pages and pages of simple "how to..."s, but most of them are really short and sweet and easy to read. So anyway, for blogging inspiration and business advice check out the new Alt blog.

Okay, hope you don't mind my soapbox here about word verification--I'll be back to myself tomorrow!

Little blogging tips part 4

I'm no expert, but every once in a while I've been posting my fave little blogging tips on here for any of you who are newer to blogging. There are tons of great resources out there (at the very least, how awesome are those Alt classes?!) but here are some of my tips for you--and they're sometimes sort of tailored to DIY/crafty/sewing blogs like you may have!

So today, I wanted to share something a little different. I'm thinking now about the blogging process, rather than about blog content or design.

Suzannah's blogging tip #10: Post frequently (at least a few times a week). If you can't do that, tweet frequently. If you can't do that, at least comment on other blogs frequently!  Do something that reminds people you exist.

When I look through blogs, I don't look at the date each entry was posted, and I don't judge how often someone posts.  But I do enjoy seeing quality, varied content on the blog homepage (showing your last 4-10 posts, generally), and of course in order to find your blog at all I have to either follow it (works much better when you post a lot), follow you or see you retweeted or mentioned on Twitter, or hear about you in a comment somewhere.

Suzannah's blogging tip #11: Make your blog easy to navigate.

However you choose to do it. That could mean using tags really well (not over-using, using for simple words like holidays, photography, recipes, personal style, whatever it is), it could mean a few links on your linkbar (I loooooove my linkbar!), it could mean some great buttons with photos or descriptions on your sidebar (home tour, our wedding, tutorials, style posts, whatever).  Blogs are great as lists of articles, but they become even better resources when people can stay on the blog looking for specific posts, learning what they want to learn that day, checking out what interests them.

Of course, tip #4 was have a search feature on your blog, so that will help it be more navigable, too!

Suzannah's blogging tip #12: Make your blog easy to FIND.

cuteblogtitle.blogspot.com is fine when you first start out, but what if you shift your focus a little after you've been blogging a while?  What if you find your title is just too long?  What if you started with yourname.blogspot.com and now want your blog's name?  Consider this...

You can buy your own domain name for pretty cheap hosted through Google/Blogger/whatever, so you don't have to do any of the fancy work of switching it over.  And, with my domain for example, adventuresindressmaking.blogspot.com redirects automatically to adventuresindressmaking.com, so anyone that had the old URL in their bookmarks or whatever can still get to it, no problem.  Having an easy-to-remember blog URL will make your blog easy for people to go to directly, tell their friends about, share in other ways, etc.  It's a win-win-win situation! ;)

So that's it for now! Hope you don't mind my friendly bits of advice, and best of luck blogging!

Little blogging tips part 3

A few more things I've been thinking about--tips I wish I'd known when I started blogging! In addition to the others I've posted, this time, thinking about visuals...

Suzannah's blogging tip #7: Use real photos.

I love Instagram as much as the next blog reader, really I do, but Instagram collages alone do not a complete blog post make.  I looooove seeing your Instagram pics on Twitter, but I really want to see primarily camera photos, no filter, on your blog posts.  Preferably original content, when you can, of course!  Maybe throw in a few Instagram shots but don't go crazy. =)
Not too many of these

Suzannah's blogging tip #8: Don't overdo it with blog design.

When I first started, I got really excited about free blog templates and color schemes.  Then I realized, when I looked at the blogs I really respected and was inspired by, they were mostly focused on content, not gadgets and bells and whistles.  It is personal taste, of course, but I realized I preferred a mostly plain layout with a few personalized items like my header and matching buttons.  It is pretty much true, though, that a white background is easiest for the eyes, with black or dark text, and that too many images can be confusing.  Look around at what you like and do what you can with your blog.  I don't have the much design skills I needed to make my headers, etc. but until I was ready to have one made, I made due with one I put together in Picasa!

Suzannah's blogging tip #9: Mix it up with content!

It is part visuals, part content, of course... in addition to the tips above and in these posts, think about quality, varied, largely original content.  They say "content is king," meaning, original content is what gets you noticed.  But if you can't post original content all the time, you don't have to only post pics of things you've done or made or worn.  Combining those posts with others (inspirations, fave links, weekend updates, whatever it is) can make your blog more fun to follow.  Always something new and exciting to check out!

So that's what's been on my mind of late.  Any other thoughts about tips for new bloggers?

More little blogging tips

Not long ago I posted about some things I've learned about sewing/home dec/crafty blogging.  I really enjoyed hearing from some of you readers who are new bloggers or who read my blog and had ideas for me!  I love how we can all help each other out!

So here are a few more little tips for ya.  In addition to the first three I mentioned...

Suzannah's blogging tip #4: Search feature.

Please, oh, please, add a Search widget on your blog!  On Blogger this is really easy--it's one of the widgets you can put anywhere you please.  I have one on my right sidebar a few images down.  It's really helpful if someone sees something on your blog but doesn't remember exactly when it was.  Using keywords, people can find your posts.  You want that, right!?  Tags are helpful for this, too, but searching is way easier.

Suzannah's blogging tip #5: Make it easy for people to follow you.

There are so many great tools out there for following blogs (I just got a Bloglovin' account and love it! Here's my blog on it), so it's great to have lots of easy one-click ways for people to follow you.  Blogger, Twitter, RSS, Bloglovin'... add buttons for people to connect with you!

Suzannah's blogging tip #6: Pinterest!

I looove Pinterest (duh. Who doesn't?).  But, it's also a great way to introduce people to blogs!  I've found a lot of fave blogs through it.  So, take great pictures that people want to pin, for one, and you can create a board for your faves from your blog.  A tutorials board, a board for special projects... when they're on Pinterest already, they're a lot easier for people to pass around and get linked back to you from!  And, it's so much fun.  You can also look at anything that's pinned from your blog, click on the link, and see all the pics people have pinned from your site!!  And, you can get a Pin It! button for the bottom of your posts to make it even easier for people to pin your stuff.

Sewing/style/decor blogging tips

I LOVE finding new blogs.  I love reading blogs!  And I love writing this blog.

Twitter and Pinterest are so awesome for helping me find new blogs to follow--and any blogs that have lists of their fave blogs, or share links... like Everybody Everywear.  Anyways, when I find new blogs, there are a few things I appreciate...

(When I started this blog I didn't know much about the blogging world.  I read some books and started exploring big and small blogs... and on some of them I read tips for improving my blog!  From those and other sources, and from exploring inspirational blogs, I learned a lot in the first year or so.  So I'd love to pass on some ideas and tips!  I am NOT an expert but I'd love to help you if I can, and as a reader there are things I enjoy in other blogs!)

Suzannah's blogging tip #1: Big pictures.

BIG pictures.  Blogs are so visual, and if you're doing a sewing, decor, or clothing post, your readers will want to see pics!  On Blogger, when you first put the pic in, it's "Medium." Make it Large or preferably X-Large!  Make your column widths big enough to accommodate the X-Large pics.  It'll make your blog look way more professional and beautiful.

Suzannah's blogging tip #2: Get Twitter!

I can't "follow" blogs on Blogger anymore--hit the limit of 300 ages ago.  Now I get my news from Twitter!  Get a Twitter account and tweet at least once a day.  Tweet when you post a new post and whenever you want to share anything else!  I want to follow your blog, but I can't if I can't stay in touch with you!

Suzannah's blogging tip #3: Get rid of the captcha.

Unless you have a really good reason, or get a lot of spammers, get rid of the captcha phrase that people have to type in before they can comment.  You want comments, don't you???  Typing in the phrase to prove that we're human slows commenters down.  I read this tip before I started my blog and have never had a problem with spam comments.  I get them sometimes but I just delete them.

Okay, that's all for now.  Just wanted to blab a little in the hopes that we all can blog and read and share each other's great thoughts!
