Happy St. Lucia day! (Yesterday)

December 13th is St. Lucia Day, an important part of the Christmas season in Sweden, and my fiance's family is Scandinavian and celebrates every year.  The tradition is that the oldest daughter in the family makes a breakfast including cinnamon roles.  St. Lucia wears a red sash and a crown of candles, since St. Lucia was originally on the solstice.  Kirstin is away at school in Minnesota this year, so we Skype-chatted with her during breakfast and some of the craft time.  Here she is in her crown on the laptop, with little brother Cory, cat, and American Girl doll in St. Lucia garb:

Anyway, this year was my first St. Lucia day at the Stanley household, which is followed by an art project where everyone usually makes ornaments of the same style.  This year it was painting these awesome little wood trees the Stanleys got at the Christmas tree farm, whittled or sanded right here in Oregon.  We painted them and some brown paper discs and shapes after breakfast.  It was so much fun!  And we came up with some fun things:

What a creative family!  Mine are the polka-dotted disc and the tartan plaid tree =).

Round mirror options

I bought a round mirror today at JoAnn.  I used a coupon and spent $2.99 on it, so it was a pretty good purchase regardless of what I do with it, but my question now is, what should I use it for?  I have noticed a majillion round mirrors in stores and websites recently, and I know there are great DIY projects for them, but I don't know what I want to do with mine, a 12" circle.  Here are some options:
Apartment Therapy's thrift store plate mirrors:

Buy a bunch more and just hang them up plain:

Apartment Therapy/Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie, not sure which, recycled magazine mirror:

Bark pieces like Pottery Barn:

Leaf wreath candle plate style from Crate and Barrel:

Or a bunch of brass sticks behind it, also Crate and Barrel:

Or do something really crazy, bike tire-style, like CB2 gets the look of:

I'm sure there are a ton of other great DIY project ideas out there!  What do you all think I should do with this very versatile wall decor purchase?

Curtain-turned-miniskirt!

I found a crazy piece of heavy 100% cotton in a vintage-ey print at the Goodwill outlet a while ago, about a yard and a half in very odd chunks and rectangles.  I'm assuming it was at one time a curtain.  There was some discoloration and wear from where the hem was once I took it out, but I didn't use the icky parts!  I like the contrast and wanted a black and white print miniskirt, but for now this is good.  I like navy, too.

Simple jersey scarf, one long seam!

I made a super fun, easy cotton jersey scarf today out of a small piece of fabric from the JoAnn's clearance shelf.

Disney at Ruffles and Stuff has a tutorial about how to do this scarf, which is where I got the idea.  It will be cute and not too warm for wearing as an accessory inside as well as with a coat outside.

Brrrr! Insulating with a draft stopper

It is cold. The highs are in the 30's here this week and I can feel the icy chill through the glass and the space beneath the front door of our little apartment.  I am so glad to have warm curtains on some of our windows but the kitchen floor has been colder than usual with the draft from the front door coming through!  I was thinking I need one of those draft-stoppers they sell in SkyMall and the like... I made one out of scraps of red tartan from the plaid miniskirt I cut up for my stockings.  It's wintery/Christmasey, which makes sense since I'll only really need it in winter.  I filled it with rice, so it's heavy and stays in place.  Super easy and I can feel it making a difference already!

Tailoring isn't actually that hard.

Tailoring, or basic coat-making, is not as hard as I thought it would be.  I doubt I could make a complicated man's tailored jacket or anything, but making this coat, shoulder pads and interfacing and all, was not too bad step-by-step.

I used McCall's 5525.

I had some really nice quality pink wool that my mom got at the thrift store.  That really helped.  It was quite a project, more pieces than I'd like to work with, but I think it would be fun to do this again with a cotton canvas in a cute color for spring.

I love tartan! And the perfect remake for stockings...

I am sooo good!  I'm not kidding, I made this stocking and THEN found these similar ones online.  I love tartan plaids and classic colors, especially at Christmas, and I did this fun DIY project out of a pleated miniskirt from the Goodwill Outlet.  See?
I used a pre-quilted navy cotton that I had left over from another project as the top.  I didn't put our names on them but the contrast is nice, the band of navy.  I used this skirt for the wool plaid:
So as I was getting ready to post these pics, I did a quick search and found these super similar stockings from Williams-Sonoma and Pendleton:
$58 from Williams-Sonoma:
And $48 from Pendleton:
And of course Martha has one, also a re-fashion but from a felt blanket:
I don't like Martha's as well.  But seriously, how good am I???  They are so similar to the ones I made!  *Success for the day!*

My favorite Christmas gifts for a good cause

The Hunger Site and its brother/sister sites have great stores that donate cups of food or other supplies to needy causes.  I try to remember to click every day on The Hunger Site and all the others, but usually go through phases of remembering every day and then forgetting for several months.  Oops.  This holiday season while thinking about shopping online, I went to The Hunger Site store and found several GREAT Christmas gift (or treat for myself) items that donate cups of food, mammograms, health care for kids, books, acres of rainforest, or food and care for rescued animals.  And did I mention the prices are AMAZING???  See?
Ceramic travel mugs:

or the plain one:

Record label coasters:

Recycled bike chain coat rack for only $12.95:

Sandalwood vases:

Super cute bracelets for $16.00 each:

and tons of other great gifts.  Take a look!!

Christmas decor around the house

I have begun to decorate for Christmas!  We got a tree this weekend, the first time for both of us.  I have been collecting cute red and green items at Dollar Tree and JoAnn for the past couple trips and things are coming together (at least in the living room).  I went to my parents' house and pulled out some old favorite nutcrackers and a tree topper and displayed them again.  Today I put together this project for a total of $3 using glass vases, plaid ribbon, scotch tape, and the bottom boughs of our Christmas tree!
They sell these cool, clean-lined flower vase things at Dollar Tree and they totally rock.  I see similar things for way more at JoAnn and even Marshall's.
