Sewing Circle: Lovely lacy one-shoulder party dress

You're gonna love this lacy asymmetrical party dress on Sewing Circle this week!

Q: I am obsessed with a few inspiration pieces but don't know where to look in terms of patterns. This lovely lace dress...I have about two yards of green lace I am dying to use up and I think a dress like this would be perfect for it, but I have no idea where to begin!

A: Hello Megan,
Great that you already have the lace! I’d say get a lining that matches exactly if you can, preferably something not too lightweight. You definitely want something substantial since the lace is see-through! You may want to use an interlining (sew like it’s part of the lace) as well as a true lining (constructed separately, then put with the outside right sides together like you would any other dress. You can use a slim sleeve from almost any dress pattern, just double check that the armhole lines up and cut the sleeve or armhole down accordingly. As for patterns, here are some I found that would get the look:

Butterick B4343.  Very, very close. Don’t let the scary 90’s look dissuade you!

McCalls M6283.  A pretty good bet. Minus the leg slit, of course, and cut it to the right length.

Simplicity 2053. · Very different in that it has a bunch of radiating pleats, but overall the same shape and look—and it has the sleeve you want. I just bought this pattern, actually, but haven’t tried it out yet!

McCalls M6320. Use this for the bodice but line it up with another princess seam dress pattern so you can extend it down past the waist, etc.

New Look 6912.  Has some gathering at the shoulder and a separate waistband, but similar look and has the sleeve:

That should get you started!

Readers, do any of these get your vote?  What would you recommend?!?

  1. I always love these posts! That lace dress is absoutely beautiful and I love that she is using it as inspiration. It would look lovely in green. The Simplicity 2053 is a great match, and I like the New Look pattern too, since that wasit band would be easy enough to omit. Great suggestions!

  2. Threads magazine has a fantastic issue for working with lace (embellishing it, too). Might even have several posts online to view. I used their tips when I made my lace MOB dress last year.

Your sample dress is beautiful. Hope we all eventually get to see the finished dress! Green's my favorite color!
