3 ways to style windowpane check

I am excited for this trend!! Been seeing it around quite a bit lately and I think it’s one of those patterns that can dominate or make you feel like you don’t need to do anything else to have a an outfit or room look finished--but there are also some great ways to complement that can make you feel really stylish and complete.

3 ways to style windowpane check

These will work for clothing for home decor!

1. Steer into the 80s.

Some of the sweaters I’ve seen in this pattern or have dropped shoulders and mock turtlenecks, and an oversized fit. You can totally picture them with shoulder pads, right? This look is not new, it’s coming back, but it really does look good with gold hoop earrings and high-waisted jeans.

On this one, just don’t overdo it with a statement necklace on top or clear plastic oversized glasses--unless you want to look like you're a high school front desk lady from the 80s. (That’s just when I picture.) This look is actually my favorite because it’s simple and the pattern really gets to stand out on a large canvas.

2. Mix (and stick to) neutrals.

Most of the windowpane checks I’ve seen have been black and white or camel and white. When your statement piece is also a neutral, you may want to add more texture and colors of neutrals to make it interesting. A black and white pillow against a white couch with white walls and a light colored rug can look very stark and modern.

I prefer to see this pattern with some other textured or patterned pillows also in a neutral color. So at least, add a textured soft colored scarf or throw blanket.

3. Go festive!

Something about plaids and checks! Windowpane, too, just feels so perfect for the holidays when you pair it with red and green or velvet! In sweater form, it’s cozy for an evening holiday dinner, but you can also go a little sleek here and make this a really fun alternative to just a black skirt. Out of velvet blazer and slightly sparkly necklace… So unique and festive!

Birthday resolution, plus what I'm buying for fall (for work and weekends!)

A couple weeks ago on my birthday, I shared on my Instagram stories I shared a goal for myself for this year... I need to take care of myself more, but not just by taking time to read, relax, all that--I need to buy myself the clothes and makeup I need in order to feel put together.

This form of self-care is an area I've really struggled with for a long time since I hate spending money. But I'm really trying to be more balanced about it and buy myself things I need!

With that in mind... I'm sharing a few items I'm really excited about and have bought or am seriously considering for my fall wardrobe!

Faves so far are that camo sweatshirt (wearing it as I type this--the perfect at-home comfy piece that still makes me feel current and cute), and these jeans are so, so flattering! I am 100% on Team High Waisted Jeans and have been needing some new ones that aren't skinny in the leg. (Love them--you should also size down in these!) It's hard to find cute jeans that don't have raw hems these days, so both of the pairs in this collage are a little more versatile than the raw ones.

I definitely struggle to find cute shoes for work as my requirements are tough: real leather, relatively flat but not frumpy, come in wide widths (I have wide feet), and affordable. These fit the bill!

Slow transition to fall... a navy geometric stripe miniskirt (aargh, accidental sideways skirt again?!)

This happens every year. I'm a summer person, and I'm not ready for cooler weather, earth toned clothing, and pumpkin everything. Not ready yet. It's not even Labor Day, and I'm seeing fall and holiday stuff everywhere.

But I can't resist forever. I realized this year that I should slowly transition into the next season, and gracefully shift my wardrobe, cooking, and habits into fall-friendly ones. So I'm starting with this miniskirt!

It's a heavier brocade fabric, so it's not too summery for a fall look, but it's a miniskirt so it's good in the still-warm weather we've been having. I found this cool fabric and wanted a super simple design, so I used New Look 6003 but without the waistband!

Oh--the super bummer thing--this is not the first time I've done this, but unfortunately I designed the skirt for a horizontal stripe and then just went to default mode when cutting and cut it out in-line with the grain. URGH, why do I do that?!! I didn't remember or notice until I was almost done with the skirt, even!! "Wait, didn't I want to do this with horizontal stripes....aaaaack, crap!!!" is about how it went. I'm just so used to cutting things on the grain.

So, it turned out okay, although not as fun and pattern-emphasizing as I was hoping.

It still works well for a late summer outfit--I could even wear it to work, like with a navy sweater or button-up--and was a reason to pull out some riding boots for mid-week date night this week!
Jacket: Old Navy (similar). Tee: Gap. Necklace: Old Navy. Bag: Wilson's Leather (similar). Boots: Urban Outfitters (similar). Skirt: DIY!

Here's to a slow, seasonally appropriate wardrobe shift this fall! And, may I pay more attention next time I cut something out!

How to Wear DIY: The long striped maxi skirt to work

I've been really enjoying the corporate culture at my new job, and appreciate how lots of people put some extra style into their work clothes--compared to where I worked before, where things were pretty boring and I didn't really express myself through clothes.

Especially since it's summer, I see lots of cute dresses and skirts on ladies around the office, including great bright colors and prints and things I recognize from this season at Target or Old Navy. ;) So not too fancy, but fun! And people look very pulled-together.

We also have casual Fridays. Didn't have those at my old job. I loooooove that I get to wear jeans once a week now! It almost makes it feel like the weekend. ;)

But, it's summer, so it's not really jeans weather out, and people are seriously wearing gladiators and pastel dresses and Bermuda shorts all the time, so I really haven't felt like wearing jeans on casual Fridays. But I don't feel quite right wearing some of my cute summery dresses, either. I mean, some people look like they're dressed for an outdoor wedding half the time, but... that's not me.

So to keep the daytime, more classic look but still relax on Fridays, I've been wearing my jean jacket and a skirt. I've literally worn this thing the past three Fridays, I think. So last week, I wore it with the black and white striped maxi skirt I made last year, and a minty-aqua J. Crew tee I just picked up at Goodwill. I love when throwing in a new color makes things feel more exciting!

I also wore a massive top bun, which I guess made it preppier and less totally casual, and lent itself to the blackberry picking we did Friday night after dinner in our neighborhood. You can see those bad boys in the background--there are SO many of them by that fence!
Jacket: Nordstrom Rack (similar). Tee: J.Crew via Goodwill. Watch: Ross?
Sandals: Ross or DSW. Skirt: DIY, here!

What are your tips for summer casual Fridays? What can I wear next week so I don't wear out the jean jacket's welcome too much?? ;)
