Totally successful: Burgundy dyed jeans project

Don't you love it when plans work out perfectly?? I am super excited about my burgundy dyed jeans project that I did last week--and wore all weekend. ;) I've dyed jeans before, and they were fine too, but these came out with totally even color and just the right level of saturation, even after I washed them in the washer to get the extra dye out. I feel totally secure about wearing them and not shedding burgundy dye if I sit on a wet park bench or something.

So, I took a pair of grey cheap-o jeans (Forever 21; I bought them at Goodwill) and a box of burgundy RIT dye, and... voila. Sink-dying method, added the salt, all that. I haven't used RIT dye in years since I have vague memories of little dots of color not mixing in (I've used iDye and Dylon more recently), but this color was the one I wanted (remember my fall wardrobe wishlist? I wanted burgundy cords. These will do instead!!), and it worked out great. Helps that the jeans are 100% cotton, of course; don't think I would have tried it with something with poly in it.

Before and after...

Wahoo!! Lovely trendy burgundy jeans, for the cost of the dye with my JoAnn coupon. =)

Have you been rocking the fall-colored jeans this season? Any successful outfit ideas? If not, I can totally recommend DIYing the color you want! =)

  1. Love! But after trying the procion dyes, I'm never going back to RIT. I did a bright turquoise pair, and I'm itching to try another color. Maybe burgundy should go on my list now.

  3. Awesome. Make sure you add dye sealant before rewashing. I used Rit dye for some towels - they started out dark gray and are now a light periwinkle color after several washes because I failed to seal the dye. - Leah, leahwise.wordpress.com

  4. Wow! It turned out so great. I will have to keep this in mind for jeans that I have that are a non-trendy color currently instead of donating them myself to Goodwill.

  5. These are awesome! My issue with RIT dye is that I always manage to get it on something, and then I have a hell of a time getting it off said floor/counter/bathtub. Any recommendations on how to dye things and keep your work space clean?

    1. Hmm, I know the worry... I did these in the kitchen sink, and mixed the dye and hot water in a tall container before pouring into the sink, which was less than 2/3 full. And kept a rag handy for a couple of splashes!

  8. Those look fantastic (also, I love the cut of those jeans!). I would never have guessed that jeans would take the dye like that, but they look wonderful. Makes me want to find something in the house to dye :o)

  14. Glad it worked! Shauna and I tried our hand at dying for the first time a few months ago. I had no idea if it would work or not, but it came out great! Pretty sure we used RIT dye as well.
