House news. Not great, but news!

I've been sharing news about our house that's under construction, as we get it, and throughout this process (we signed the papers in January) we've been soooooo excited to move into our new place! The expected move-in date was originally July 15, but things have been behind schedule since mid-June... and we didn't know our move-in date until this week.

Without knowing a move-in date, it's hard to plan much--turn in our 30 days' notice, buy a couch, whatever, but I think I was lying to myself a little that it would still be sometime in July.  Well, now the pressure's off, I guess, because we found out our move-in date yesterday and it's...

(Latest photos.) We have trees and a doorknob, but no porch...

Cabinets are in!! No doors yet, but I loooooove the color, I can tell already... (not loving the workmen's Gatorade bottle...)

Master bathroom cabinets. Hard to tell here but it's the whole wall, so long! Two sinks, I can't wait!

Not until AUGUST 21!!!!  (Forgive the mild freak-out. I'll get over it, but I'm a little anxious).

More than a month later than we were expecting, so more rent to pay and less time to enjoy the area during the summer months. But, oh well. This way we have more time to... pack? ;) Something.

But I really can't wait to move in and start doing fun DIY projects to share with you!  And, I really want a washer and dryer that work more than the bare minimum!

So, I'll be taking the next five weeks to continue to mentally prepare, and I may have to buy a few more things as deals come up. Luckily my husband's not too annoyed by the World Market dining room table we bought last weekend because it was a floor model for $200 off, in pieces wrapped in pallet wrap and leaning against our living room wall. We'll just keep walking around it, I guess!

Any tips for me to help me see this extra time as a gift?  =)  Would love to hear your wisdom!

  2. Real estate in my experience always runs at least a month later than you think it will. Hope the time flies for you!

  6. Waiting sucks. That's just the way it is. And even though your house is coming along real nice, I can understand why you are a bit taken aback by the fact that you can't move in until august 21. But, here are my tips: I don't know if it's the same thing where you live as where I live, but at the moment the 'Sales-period' is really coming along. So: go shopping, find some good thrifts and dream about where and how you will place it. Although, I guess you already did that. So my other piece of advice: keep breathing and take each day at a time. Because every day that passes is a day you get closer to moving day!

    1. Thank you! I can definitely work on the assignment of "go shopping." It's true, more time to shop around for the perfect thing at a good price!

  7. You may be a more organized person than I am, but here's what I would do in your situation: Every time I move, I have the intention of going through everything carefully and purging things we don't use/need. In reality, I usually do this for about one room and then end up having to throw everything willy-nilly into boxes the night before the movers arrive. So maybe use the time to do a big purge?

    1. Good idea! Purging does feel good, and I hope to have less clutter in the new place!

  8. I don't think I have ever heard of a construction project that finishes on time!

  9. I LOVE the color of the cabinets! But you're right, the extra time means extra opportunities to find good deals! Have you been on Fab.com, Joss & Main, One Kings Lane and The Foundary? Those are good sites that have awesome deals! And there's always Home Goods - I always find amazing stuff there! Let me know if you want to go on a shopping trip!!!

    1. They turned out PERFECT! We chose between a few stains but didn't know for sure how it would look on the actual cabinets but it worked out so great! And yes, I DEFinitely want to go on a shopping trip with you to Home Goods/Marshalls etc!!!!

  10. The new place looks so cute! It's a bummer about not being able to move in till the 21st of August :( I totally agree with EllenQ because I always do that too! Plus I always end up throwing stuff in boxes randomly because I always underestimate the amount of time it is going to take to pack. At least you'll have time to pack things in an orderly manner.

Also, I've nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award :) Check it out here: http://www.youngtexanmama.com/2012/07/i-am-so-excited-that-i-recently.html

  11. My husband is a builder. He just built a 10 thousand square foot home. He has one more day....it is 6 months behind. Feel lucky. The builder loses out too.

    1. Ooh, thanks for the perspective! Glad it's not 6 months behind (or 10,000 sq ft. Oy!)...

  12. Having extra time is much better than not having enough. As a military wife, we've moved 4 times in the last 3 years with MAYBE 2 weeks notice. We've always known about when we're moving, and sure they pay for movers, but finding out you need to be halfway across the country in a week or two is no fun.

    1. Wow, yes, very stressful. 2 weeks notice is crazy! I am grateful for the lowered pressure, I guess!

I was the office manager for a construction company for 21 years, and I'll tell you right now, don't expect this new date to be honored. Too many things will happen between now and then. A "get done on time" penalty clause should be in every contract. Amazing how things get done quicker that way.

  14. Garden! Garden! Garden! Fun to plan. I'd love to help... Planting season is just around the corner. Find the view from each room and have the hubs stand ouside where the view is. Then run outside and mark it with a stake. Get some measurements ( if you don't have them) of planting spaces, decks etc. As you unpack boxes and break them down, you can lay them out on the dirt to prevent weeds etc. This also attracts earthworms. This will help prep the soil for Spring planting. Use weed fabric staples to pin the boxes down so they don't blow away.
At least, plant some daffs by the front door. It's Oregon. It's the Law.
