Fun flippy hem detail on this skirt!

As I build my work wardrobe, I recognize that one piece that's relatively quick and easy to make is a skirt.  But of course I want interesting skirts, with flattering shape and fun details that make them different.  Which is why I was happy to grab this pattern when McCall's were on sale for $0.99...
It's McCall's M5523, and I made option D.  I used a charcoal heather suiting with a bit of a navy tint to it, also on sale at JoAnn's.

It looks simple in the front...

...but has a cute flippy hem detail in the center back!!
It's a professional-looking skirt for work, that also has some fun to it!

P.S. I think my camera is broken.  We took these with my phone.  I have been wanting a new camera for a while... thinking about a Cannon Rebel.  I welcome suggestions if you have any!

  1. You know, I was just thinking to myself, "I should really try my hand at making one of those ruffled kick-pleat skirts," and then there you go!
    Stop reading my mind!

(Also: the skirt is adorable. :)

  2. i LOVE this style of skirt! Business in the front, party in the back. Like a sexy version of a mullet.

  3. Terrific skirt! The back alone is worth sewing this one up!

  4. I feel your pain with the camera. I was checking out the Rebel 2Ti but then heard about the Fujifilm hs20 that is supposed to be released later this month. It has a manual zoom but the lens doesn't detach. Since I'll be using this camera on hikes as well as for regular photo taking, I'm going to wait to check it out. Otherwise, I'm going with the Rebel- it takes a really nice picture. I suggest going to a camera store and trying a few out to see how they feel in your hands. Good luck!

  5. I have a Rebel and I really like it. I have only had it for a few months but already the pictures don't even compare to my point and shoot. It was pricy so I make sure I use it all the time to justify my purchase.

  6. Very cute skirt and such a nice fit. After a lot of research, my sister recently got a Nikon D3100 and is very pleased. She got a very good deal at the online store of a NY camera shop for the body and two lenses, so that's always fun too. As recommended above, definitely go to a store and try out a bunch of models and see what feels right.

  7. This skirt is so cute. I made the same design only in khaki. I've received many compliments, as I'm sure you will too. :D

  8. Like the flippy floppy skirt a lot. Had to laugh at the comment about the sexy mullet. A mullet was never sexy!

  9. I've sewn that pattern several times and it's really comfortable to wear and gets lots of compliments. I bet you'll love it.

Love the skirt - I am going to have to pick up the pattern for sure!

With this pattern, did you find it was true to the finished garment sizing or did you have to adjust it? I've never sewn with a McCalls, so just wanted your opinion!

  11. Such a cute skirt! I have a Canon Rebel... I'm not sure of the exact model number but I have had it for YEARS... and I LOVE it! I just purchased a macro lens for it...and I use it a whole lot. It's good for sewing close ups, I use it for taking pictures of my daughter... just about everything. Hope this helps :)

  12. Hmmm, I can't wait to get a new camera! I have played with some at the store and am now trying to figure out online used camera shopping...

Glad to hear some of you have made this pattern before! I hope to make it again in other fabrics. Did you line yours??

Dayl, I found it fit a little larger than usual, but I always cut patterns several sizes smaller than my measurements would suggest. There are a lot of seams in it, though, so you can always take it in evenly if it's too big!

  13. Ooo, cute! I have this in my 'to make' pile and I. Always line my skirts. I don't want to fuss with finding the right slip! lol
