How to Wear DIY: Time to bring out the fake fur again

Okay, okay, it's cold. I don't know if this is fall weather or winter, but it's definitely time to bring out the fake fur-trimmed vest I made last winter. Let me explain my slightly annoyed tone... 1) I hate being cold, 2) it was 70 degrees last weekend at 5:00 in the evening. This weekend, it was 30 degrees when we woke up around 7. JEEZZZ!!! This is a very sudden change, Oregon!! What the heck?!

So this weekend, I tried on several fall-ey outfits and realized why I don't like cold weather. You only have one basic option: long pants, boots, and something sweater-ey on top. This gets boring very fast. And sweaters take up a lot of room to store, and are kinda spendy (compared to tank tops, anyway), so you can't have millions of them to keep the variety... and, winter clothes are normally in dull colors. I get bored easily!!

So I ended up making my cold weather weekend outfit more interesting and fresh by layering the DIY faux fur trimmed vest over a cotton motorcycle jacket--gives the colorblock sleeve look trendy this fall!--and breaking out my newest purchase, these Vince Camuto beautiful saddle-color leather booties--Ross clearance, $34.99. Biggest clothing purchase I've made in a while! ;)

Double-DIY time... the super easy DIY infinity scarf I did last fall went great with the boots, and plus, isn't a big scarf just the best with skinnies and booties?! Playing with proportions...

Scarf: DIY makeover. Aviators: Forever 21. Watch: Husband's old Fossil one.
Jacket: Mystery brand, Goodwill. Jeans: Forever 21. Vest: DIY, upcycled! Booties: Vince Camuto, Ross

So am I totally crazy to be so annoyed by this cold weather? What am I missing to keep my wardrobe interesting?!

Fleece-lined tights, for under dresses and skirts. Sweater tights work well for me, but i live in Southern California.

  2. Such a cute outfit! I love how all the different elements keep it interesting, but it looks cohesive too.

I hate cold weather too! Especially when it comes to footwear. When I lived in WV, Uggs were the only thing that would keep my feet warm in the snow.

  3. Even if you not feel like you have a lot of options you still look cute! I'm the opposite of you. I live down in Salem and I love it when it gets cold because then you get to layer which gives lots of combinations and options IMO. I was piste last week when it was 70 degrees and I had to take the flannel sheets off the bed - too hot LOL .

  4. Fleece lined tights are the best! Like wearing a pair of pants...but not! I found them at the Nordstrom Rack downtown for a great price last year.

  5. We have lots of snow up here in Canada now! My favorite winter items are sweater dresses, long flannel shirt dresses with tights and a great pair of insulated boots. You don't have to sacrifice warmth for style!

  7. I second the vote for skirts and dresses with tights. Also layering is fun. And the multitude of scarf/ cowl/ shawl neckwear options are great for those of us who love to knit... Bring on the cold.
Yesterday it was 70ish here and this morning it was snowing. So I totally know about the WTF weather feeling.

  10. Seriously what has been up with the weather, only a week ago it was in the high 60s. The one plus to the chilly climate - cute fall outfits! I love layering and scarves.

  11. Thanks for the ideas!! Will have to try thicker, lined tights... and more layering!

  12. I do love winter clothing what I don't like is the color scheme they tend to abide by. I mean does it really hurt to add color to coats and sweaters. Although now if you search well enough you can find beautiful coats with great pops of color.

You are not crazy to hate this cold weather. I hate it too! I live in my coat when the temperature dips - seriously - I wear it to bed sometimes!

  16. I go for the sporty/bright winter look - lots of fleece sweaters in bright colors! I got a great cotton trench coat at old navy last fall that is Kelly green, and it is pretty cute for everyday rain-dodging. If I could justify such an expensive purchase, I would get an omni heat coat. I've tried them on in store and they are very nice. I like the blue of this one.

  17. Mmm, colored coats and sweaters--I could do with more of those! They do get hard to store, though... scarves!!

  18. The scarf and the booties go really well together. I usually wear brown boots and, although I have quite a lot of scarves, I end up wearing only 3 or so in earthy shades. I feel so put together when my scarf matches my boots, it's ridiculous.
