How to Wear DIY: The super versatile casual striped skirt

This summer I've been exploring the fun of short knit skirts instead of shorts, for a casual look that's also comfy and not too hot! This one's one of my faves, a skirt I made out of a "vintage" 90's boxy tee. It's the perfect weight for a skirt, actually, much heavier than tees are today, and I love the stripes.

The other day I paired it with a new neon chartreuse cardi from the Old Navy clearance and my new fave accessory, my straw fedora. Easy summer look!
Shoes and sweater: Old Navy (similar shoes). Tee: Aritzia. Necklace: Frock Stock.
Hat: Forever 21Watch: AE. Skirt: DIY, remade from vintage tee!

In fact, I love this skirt so much, I wish I could find several other heavy weight knit tops to turn into skirts! It's hard to find that kind of knit at the fabric store. But, who knows if this skirt phase of mine will last beyond this summer, anyway. I'm full into it right now, though!

Are you a skirt person or a shorts person in the hot weather? I just feel like skirts can make you look pulled together easier than shorts! Maybe I'm wearing shorts wrong.. ;)

  1. I do love a good pair of shorts, but I think you are right. I feel more put together in a skirt and this one looks so cute and so comfortable. Great idea! I'll now be on the hunt for some good knit tees to convert into summer skirts!

I picked up a striped maxi skirt for $1 - it's long and straight but the waist is huge. I think I'll have a go at turning it into 2 skirts. Great idea!

    1. Those are fun! The perfect striped fabric is hard to find, so upcycling is a great idea!

  4. I love both shorts and skirts, but I agree with you, skirts are more formal.
    What a great DIY!

  5. I'm definitely a skirt person! That whole outfit looks so cute, I love the neon with the stripes. The hat looks great too, I wish I was brave enough to wear a fedora.

    1. I wasn't until last month, seriously!! I just went to Forever 21 and tried on about 10. Then I threw caution to the wind and tried it out. =)

I think skirts are much more comfortable when it's warm and there look more put together. What I really like about knit skirts is that you can wear them in summmer and if it get's really cold in winter you can wear them under a dress that wound't be warm enough otherwise.

    1. Definitely! I never thought to layer one under a dress but I did wear this one with tights in the winter! http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2012/01/how-to-wear-diy-summer-to-winter-skirt.html

I like skirts and dresses in the summer because they are so much cooler (take that both ways, if you wish). Seriously, skirts don't cling to your legs and bottom the way shorts can. Speaking as one whose summers are very hot and humid, it's skirts and dresses everyday I can. As for long pants, not likely, making an exception for my loose white linen with wide legs. Those don't hold the heat. Nothing clinging to my skin - not in July or August.

I agree it is amazing how much more pu together you can look in a shirt and top.
