Where do you sew? Sewing room/office inspiration, please!

Apologies for the incomplete post yesterday!! Oopsies!  Long story, I had a long night Wednesday... anyway, yesterday's Sewing Circle post is up and ready for your tips and ideas!  Thanks!

I have another fun question for you today... where do you sew?

I've shared that we're househunting right now, and I am SO anxious to find a great place!  So excited for this process and to be out of our small rental place, and one big plus of the new place will be I'll have a sewing room!  Or, at least a real sewing area.  Right now my husband and I share an office, which we actually really like, but it's cramped and all I have is a tiny 1960's sewing table that I also put my laptop on.  It's cramped.  No desk space at all.

So I'm looking for ideas and inspiration!  Although we don't have the new place yet, I'd like to start envisioning what I'll need for a sewing/office area.

Now, I have a Pinterest board for offices I love, but I have a hard time finding inspirational sewing rooms that are also realistic.  We can't all have Martha's sewing room, ya know!

I would love to hear your tips (or dreams!) for great, usable sewing room spaces in a reasonable number of square feet.  Do any of you have craft room Pinterest boards I could check out?  Or, have you blogged about dream craft spaces before?  OR, do you have an awesome sewing area you'd like to show me?  I'd love to feature some on the blog!  Leave a comment with a link on this post or send me an email with your pics.

Particularly if your sewing room is also something else--I dunno where I'll find ideas and help for sewing/computer rooms!  That are functional and cute.  I don't even know where to start!

I have seen a good series on home sewing rooms before, and this collection of pics is fun.  (But I gotta say that it's SO hard to look at pics of an often-cluttered space like a sewing room on a blog when the photos are small!  So, bloggers out there who've shared your sewing rooms linked to that collection, PLEASE make your pics Large or X-Large!  Would make it a lot easier.)

Anyway, wrapping up--I'd love to hear your ideas for combining a sewing and office space!  Or see your pics!  Leave a comment on this post and/or email me!

  1. I wish I had some great ideas and inspiration for you! I'm living in a two bedroom apartment with my parents so most of my sewing gets done on the floor or at the dining room table! When I move though, I'm somehow affording a second room!

  4. im very lucky to actually have an art studio!!! wow, right?!?! the only problem is that its an old furnace room that we finished and its not heated or cooled. so its great in the summer, i just turn on the fan. but in the winter it gets so cold and i need a space heater. but i have my art supplies, my sewing machine and serger in there. and im super messy and unorganized so its great that i can just start and stop on projects and not have to clean it up!!!

  5. I showed my sewing at my blog: http://sonnis-neahkaestchen.blogspot.com/2010/06/nahplatz-makeover.html
It's written in german but the pictures say all I think.

When we make my new sewing room, I want a switch in the wall over the table to easy switch off the sewing machine, iron and so on.
And I think of a table made of plastic-glass (in german "Plexiglas") with light in it which you can put on the wall to be a stylish light oder make it a table and trace patterns.

I hope you understand, it's difficult to discribe in english. :)

    1. I totally understand, thanks for the link! A switch for a power strip or something would be great--turn off all the sewing equipment when it's not in use. Good idea!

  6. I sew in my laundry room! Ha! My space is so small that it really forces me to be ultra organized - which is really great for keeping the creative juices flowing! Here's a gazillion pictures: http://emmyloubeedoo.blogspot.com/2011/05/sewing-room-re-reveal.html

    2. Thank you! I feel SO LUCKY to have that space! Yeah, it's not tiny by any means, but every time I bring home a new fabric haul I can feel the room shrinking! :)

  8. Unfortunately I don't have a sewing room, and maybe that's why I don't sew more often. But maybe, some day...
You should check this blog: http://www.lovemaegan.com/search/label/my%20office. It's full of inspiration.

  9. I sew in my living room! I have three little kids and having my sewing in a separate room was not working--I never got to use in unless they were asleep! Having my sewing nook in the big middle of everything is much better for me. I didn't want it to be an eyesore, though! Here are some pics of my little nook:

I do keep all my fabric, books, etc... in a closet upstairs.

  10. I too dream of a sewing/craft room of my own. Right now it's in our dinning room area where I too use my old table for my sewing, drawing, and laptop space. I want a sewing room with a lot of light and possible access to the outside for inspiration and meditating purposes. The first pic link is the color scheme I want and vintage feel: http://pinterest.com/pin/32088216064949210/ the second pic link is of the light and airy feeling - and yes, I will need 3 separate tables: http://pinterest.com/pin/32088216064949222/

  11. Check out Hungry Zombie Couture. She had a custom cabinet made that made me envious and scored some interesting storage cabinets that blew my mind a little:

    http://hungryzombiecouture.blogspot.com/2012/01/evolution-of-sewing-room-part-7.html

Right now I have our entire basement that's in the midst of a remodel. I call it my "Ladycave".
Once it's turned into functional living space though, I'm going to have to downsize. I was going to take the spare room in the basement, but I really miss sewing in a room with a tv. I don't watch it, but listening makes sewing in the basement less of a lonely experience.

    1. Thanks! Wow, she is SOOOO organized! I know what you mean about sewing in an isolated area... been there. It does get lonely. I watch Hulu on my computer a lot of times!

  12. My sewing space is what should be a small formal dining room - a nook to the side of the family/living room and open kitchen. I just moved "in" a couple months ago, and I'm working on a post about it...once I finish the small quilt that will grace its wall!

  13. I LOVE the first sewing space you posted and am suffering from a great deal of envy right now.

We turned our basement into our sewing space. It feels like a nice retreat and is where we store all of our crafts/sewing materials.

I blogged about it here -http://www.vanessavancour.com/2011/02/so-sew-buttons-on-your-underwear/

We've since added a second sewing machine and are working on adding another work table!

  14. I'm in the process of reorganizing mine. My basement living room area is a long room, so half of it is my living room, and the other half is a dedicated sewing area. I'm reclaiming some bookshelves from my mom's garage, so once it's warm enough to clean out there, I'll be posting pics on my own blog!

  15. Thanks so much, readers! Def come back with links when you finish those projects! I'd love to see ;)

  18. My sewing room is our second bedroom in our townhouse. It isn't very big, but I bought two inexpensive tables from Ikea and put them together with my desk to make an L shaped sewing area for my sewing machine, embroidery machine and serger. I also have a small television and a love seat. I made the throw pillows and curtains for this room. I know it's humble, but here it is.

Anna Maria Horner's attic studio isn't a small space, but too pretty to leave out! The most helpful think I can think of for layout is to not line everything up against the walls and use the space in the middle of the floor as well, if you have room. A two-sided desk/layout/sewing table would be so cute in the center!

I recently redid my sewing area and I love it. I blogged about it here... http://feelincrafty.wordpress.com/2011/12/08/project-organization-done/ it was a lot of work, but... I had to do something, we also use this room for our computer, my husbands screen printing area and my son's crafty corner!!

  26. I have a very small sewing room/office. I used to work on the upstairs stair landing, but when we had two teens at home there was too much noise, so I build this one. I have a Flickr set showing a tour of the room - and there is going to be a blog post real soon.

  29. We finished our basement a little over a year ago and I got a studio out of it! I love it. I have a wall for hanging fabric,a seven foot long low countertop for sewing, a wall of built in shelves for all my yarn and two tall cabinets (one still needs paint). I chose not to have a door since my tinies are usually playing in the next room.

Up until this point I only used my dining room table and so I rarely got projects done as I couldn't even start to sew unless I had enough time to set out the machine, sew, clean up and put the machine away before the next meal. As you can imagine, that was NEVER.

    I'll e-mail with a few pics tomorrow. :)

Today for my birthday, I received a cute little white storage table with wheels for my sewing needs. I don't have a sewing room, so this is so cute and "sew" perfect:)
I can roll it into the kitchen or living room or wherever I decide to sew. It has two drawers for storage. I got the table from Office Max (Item # OMO5317--Call 866 782-8262) for $60 plus tax. I'm so excited to use the table this week.
