IKEA-Anthropologie meld

I ran across these crazy images from a new designer for IKEA, Lo Bjurulf--take a look at these images!  Can you believe this is IKEA???  Apartment Therapy claims they have "obvious nods to Anthropologie and the movement toward rustic eclecticism," which is a very interesting and different way for IKEA to lean!  I like IKEA, but get tired of the same few pieces with slight variation repeated over and over, so it's great to see some of the basics styled in a new way and some wildly different pieces in these beautiful and fanciful settings.  A lot of it is lighting, but look at the amazing old-fashioned mixed with colorful mixed with mid-century vintage mixed with Anthropologie-ey style that Lo gets... feels a lot more usable or realistic for a home, in a way, than the sometimes sterile and simple typical IKEA look.  I like soft lines and variation in color and texture for the place I live in, although I like some of the funky modern stuff in the store.  Anyway.  What do you think?  Trying too hard to be something it's not, or is IKEA onto something here?
Crazy stuff, huh?
But seriously, what do you think of this new look?  What's your favorite room?

  1. What great pictures!! I'd have never know it was Ikea - I think my favorite color combo is the turquoise, teal, green and mustard in the garden dining. But I love the flowy airy light feel in the white and blue greenhouse room.

  2. I like that it's all about styling. It's still the same Ikea pieces, but presented in a different manner. I think it's a great ad compaign for people like me who have a hard time envisioning how to dress a room. I like it! (Plus, anthro styling at ikea prices... not too shabby.) I just have to be better at using my brain!

  3. I'm totally digging the yellow/purple horse barn room. Love that color combo, so yummy! Of course the wedding looks pretty fantabulous too. Those napkin rings are totally giving me some ideas for my upcoming wedding!

  5. I love that first place setting. It would be pretty fabulous to have an IKEA nearby, but no such luck for me! They just may be onto something which would attract a whole new audience. It kind of goes against the IKEA "We sell everything in this image/room" deal though.

  6. I love going to Ikea, and I'm really surprised that these area from them. The first three pictures are my favorite. A lot of my bedroom furniture is Ikea, and while it looks great, treat it gently...the fiberboard just isn't that strong. I love their dishes and decorating pieces though.

  7. I love the 4th picture- the colors really appeal to me. But the second from the last is also great. I think it's good that Ikea is branching out. I love there stuff, but I often feel the same way: same furniture (or other) but slightly different in styled in another modern, usually cute, but expected way. I think it's good for them to realize that there are more ways they can use and style the pieces that they already have. As for my home, I know that a lot of the ways they portray their goods are a little too...modern for me. I like a more rustic feeling and I love that they are branching out! thanks for sharing this

  8. I have mixed feelings about this. I love those pictures, but we trust ikea for modern swedish. We trust anthro for overpriced-shabby-pretty. They shouldn't try to be anything else, I say. If we want to mix the two, the let us consumers get creative!

  9. i dunno...looks like alot of the same ikea stuff to me, just 'dressed up' a little differently. but that's what i like about ikea--it translates into many different styles, depending on your vision.
beautiful rooms all in all, though!

  10. I agree with Shannon. When you break down the elements there are a lot of things that are typically IKEA. However, I do love love love how they have styled these photos. Definitely a little more rough, a little vintage-y, definitely a little more anthro. I'm loving the outdoor space with the blues and greens. I'm a TOTAL SUCKER for blue glass reminiscent of blue mason jars though.

  11. It looks like the same old stuff but I LOVE the way it has been dressed up. It looks like only moments before there were a bunch of people in those rooms having an amazing time.

  12. I love it. I like Ikea but it's always been a little too modern for me. I like classic and rustic stuff. So I am digging this new stuff. I wonder if it's available at my ikea.

  15. I like it. I think it's about time IKEA came around to some softer lines. I love their furniture (and the prices are incredible), but I always wished for something a bit softer and more ethereal. This is it!! And I love, love, love the wedding look in the first few pictures. How elegant and simple, but not paper-napkin looking. I am always a fan of simplistic elegance that doesn't break the bank!

  16. I like seeing Ikea used in a different style. (Like others have said -- typical Ikea items and lines, just with different accessories.) I like the way Ikea looks in a store or on blogs, but for my home, "clean modern" just doesn't look comfortable or inviting. But these pictures help me see how I can make Ikea work for me and not scream "Ikea" as soon as someone looks at my room.
