Easy retro chair makeover

A while back I got this chair at Goodwill Outlet for $5:
It's that cute, classic retro style (I love the curved back and the crisscross caning!!), in a funky darkish stain with little black speckles--you know the finish.  I was not in love.

I have seen very cute versions of this type of chair around...

From Henry Road, a company in LA that designs their own fabric and uses it on cute vintage finds:
From Jen of MadebyGirl:
A makeover by Jayne Bramley, featured on Design*Sponge:
Some fancier ones, also painted white (from Apartment Therapy)...
A fun before and after from Apartment Therapy (although it's sad she took off the caning on the sides):
A cute one with stylish side details (from BHG I think):
Anyway, I decided I wanted to paint mine white, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the fabric, so I washed down the chair with TSP, covered it up with tape, and spray-painted away.  I then had this:
The warm, pale-medium yellow nubby fabric suddenly looked very dull.  I didn't know what to do here--I like yellow, but this color was just dead.  I would have loved to recover it, but I don't technically know how to upholster and this is definitely one of those jobs that requires some fancy work with a nail gun.  So, I did something kind of weird and crazy (I would only do this to a $5 chair)...
I got out the yellow spray paint and taped off the white parts.  I spray-painted the fabric lightly, just to brighten it!!
I really like it, actually!  The coat of spray paint is so light that it sort of absorbed into the fabric and it's not scratchy or anything.

That pic is in the old apartment, but the chair hasn't found a permanent new home in the new place yet.  Although it does look pretty darn cool against the warm greyish-brownish living room walls!  More pictures of the new house to come...

Have any of you ever spray-painted fabric?  With how much success?
