Recycled comforter cover dress

I know, it sounds hideous.  It could be awful.  A recycled comforter cover... dress.  But let me explain.
I'm in a big chambray, classic blue-and white phase inspired by the usual (J.Crew, Anthropologie, Zooey Deschanel...) and found this embroidered cotton twin-sized comforter cover that I got about 10 years ago when I had a twin-sized bed for a brief period.  It was no longer in use.
I used a vintage pattern my mom made when she was my age, Vogue 8870 (more about this pattern later--I'm using it for some Anthrocopies soon!).  Retro 70's!
I had sooo much fabric (still do), and wanted to use the embroidery of the comforter cover as a detail on the dress--insta-trim!  I gave it a gathered skirt (I made it pretty long by modern standards to actually do a retro 50's/60's thing) and chose not to do the fastening down the front, or the cute collar/yoke/band thing on this one, so it's actually really different from this pattern... but you get the idea.  It's interesting about using vintage patterns; there are some things they just don't do anymore.  This pattern is a weird shape; rather than darts under and to the side of the bust, they just have one huge "dart" at the bottom that's actually a triangle shape cut out of the bodice piece, which ends up almost on the bias at the sides.  And they use a facing rather than a lining, which won't work for all my upcoming uses of this pattern, but worked for the solid chambray of this dress.

So here it is!

I love the full skirt!

  2. hey this looks fabulous! what a great remake!! I found an old old 80's chambray dress of my mother's last week. It goes all the way down to the floor and I'm thinking of chopping it off a bit and updating it. If I get around to posting about it I'll let you know.

  6. That dress in the middle of the pattern looks like the Vappu dress I'm TRYING to copy! I've almost given up though, I sure wish I had that pattern!! :) I really do love the dress you made - I think it's great!

  7. The dress came out great! I like to use recycled bed sheets and men's shirts for my dresses/blouses. Can't get any more frugal than that and I feel like I'm keeping something out of the trash dump. I also feel like I'm giving the item new life! Now your bedspread can be seen and enjoyed! It doesn't have to be cooped up in the linen closet anymore.

I love this dress. I don't think it's strange to reuse fabric for a different purpose. I am always on the lookout for vintage sheets and fabric at Goodwill for my clothing projects.
