My friend's dining room--what a makeover
Light and cheerful modern traditional dining room update
This natural rattan light fixture is from Rowabi and it’s a fun modern piece that still adds some natural texture but doesn’t feel at all boho. They have a lot of rattan options at Rowabi and they gave me a coupon code for you: SUZANNAHSTANLEY gets you 10% off!
My friend also likes furniture and decor that are newer and match, so they had this very substantial dining set from Costco, but she also likes light and bright, and this set was bringing a lot of contrast and heaviness. The table was also super long, which they wanted for family parties, but it took up a lot of space and didn’t have extensions. We looked and looked on Facebook and we were able to find a set that she bought for less than she sold the existing one for!
One thing you can’t forget when updating a room… You don’t have to stick with the blinds that came with the house. We chose a natural Raime linen Roman shade, which brings a lot of nice, light texture, and a beautiful smooth Belgian linen lined pleated curtain pair to go with (Beige color). We hung the curtains nice and wide so that when they are open all the way they don’t block any of the windows. If it were me I would leave them open all the time! The Roman shades provide privacy and light blocking, and the curtains just make the windows feel fully dressed. The window treatments are from Neutral Curtains, who I love for bamboo and Roman shades with a ton of options, and Belgian linen curtains. They are all customizable and really, very affordable, and they ship fast. I have a coupon code for you: Suzannah27 for 25% off!
The walls were light-ish before, but we realized when we painted her upstairs bathroom recently (a creamy white) that they were actually a medium gray. Again, thinking, light and airy, calm and refreshing, we went with a pale, dusty, aqua paint color on the walls (Benjamin Moore Beach Glass). We added some crown molding at the top.
Peeking through this opening you can also see the living room, which we are also working on… That room is mostly wallpapered and will also get crown molding. These are the front two rooms in the house, so it will be really nice to have them both feeling a little more formal, but still welcoming and fun.
Oh, the rug! We looked around for rugs, but I had this faded pink vintage Turkish rug in my basement playroom that I was planning on redecorating anyway so I brought it over to try it out. I think it’s kind of perfect in here, nice complementary color to the aqua walls. It’s honestly not quite wide enough for the chair, legs to be entirely on the rug when you pack them up, but that’s how vintage rugs are sometimes.
Excited to have this project done and a welcoming, light and air space for this young family! Can’t wait to finish their living room, that will be a fun before and after too!

Samples of these and a wall treatment we considered... and how they turned out!
