Hang removable wallpaper horizontally! Walls Need Love geometric print laundry room update

Our laundry room was one of the last rooms to get paint and flooring... and it felt so good when it did. We also installed white shaker cabinets above the machines for storage, in place of the cheap-o shelf that was there. (Here's the post.) It was MUCH better but still so plain! And nowhere to hang art, really.

So, removable wallpaper to the rescue again. (See how we used it in the powder room above a chair rail.) I found the perfect geometric print to accent, but not overpower, our tiny laundry room, and installed it so quickly for a fun accent wall!

Backsplash Look Horizontal Removable Wallpaper Tutorial

You will need:

  • Removable wallpaper for your space (I used one 2'x8.5' panel of this wallpaper)
  • Razor blade with handle/Xacto knife
  • Sharp scissors
  • Long straightedge
  • Cutting mat

Instructions:

1. Prepare the walls by cleaning and drying well before installing. Wait at least 2-3 weeks before installing on fresh paint. Uninstall switch plates and any other removable items on the wall.

2. Trim the white edge of the wallpaper off using a long straightedge and knife.

3. Measure the length of the wall, taking measurements at the top and bottom since the abutting walls might not be perfectly straight.

Measure to the longest measurement at multiple places along the wallpaper (both ends, a few in the middle).

Connect the dots.

Using razor blade or Xacto knife, on a cutting mat and using your straight edge as a guide, cut along the pencil line.

4. Peel the corner of the backing off. This is the tricky part. Typically when you hang removable wallpaper (see my more standard application tutorial here), you peel off the top edge and press down from top to bottom, slowly peeling back the rest of the backing as you go down. But the top edge in this case is the 62" long edge, so peeling from top to bottom just didn't work. And gravity was not on my side going from one side to the other.

So, peel off all of the backing, carefully flipping the paper over. With a helper, hang the paper up, lining up the top edge. Carefully press from the top down.

5. Cut around outlets, etc.
Re-install switch plates, etc.

Done!!

Here's the REAL before.

Much better!!
