We <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2019/11/diy-modern-traditional-bathroom-renovation-reveal.html" target="_blank">redid this bathroom in fall 2019</a> (hardest reno we ever did btw) and afterwards it was... fine. Clean, fresh, not at all offensive. But my style has changed since 2019 and I've been leaning into the traditional and romantic vibes this house does well with, and this bathroom felt so boring. </p><p>I knew adding some wallpaper above the tile, and painting the vanity to match, would totally transform it. I was overwhelmed by the prospect of the project, and choosing a paper, so I sat with this idea for more than a year. Well, I finally did it, and I LOVE it!</p><span></span><h1 style="text-align: left;">Historic home sage green wallpaper bathroom</h1><p>Ta-da! I chose the <a href="https://sandbergwallpaper.com/alexandra-sage-green" target="_blank">Alexandra Sage Green wallpaper from Sandberg Wallpaper</a>. It's a floral stripe with a 19th century French feel. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR65bmle8PMzdFmbFh2PdMHatcLMxcJDU4dCnuhqI7MbtUGjpklImBiYQ-L2ncFMgdhJgkOaYjhtUlInUdbvHN8ZxIpnOqRGnMPrVSk_1dy8N7DY9Hgqq06oRyTHDyWA_VYQpbOZxJ3M_wVBaSkW4MZWMvPXJUKd-q-Lk_xHopqX99C51lqbdR0mPw7CSQ/s4367/Sandberg%20wallpaper%20sage%20green%20bathroom%20renovation%20(1).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4367" data-original-width="2911" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR65bmle8PMzdFmbFh2PdMHatcLMxcJDU4dCnuhqI7MbtUGjpklImBiYQ-L2ncFMgdhJgkOaYjhtUlInUdbvHN8ZxIpnOqRGnMPrVSk_1dy8N7DY9Hgqq06oRyTHDyWA_VYQpbOZxJ3M_wVBaSkW4MZWMvPXJUKd-q-Lk_xHopqX99C51lqbdR0mPw7CSQ/s16000/Sandberg%20wallpaper%20sage%20green%20bathroom%20renovation%20(1).jpg"></a></div><div><br></div><div></div><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2024/03/sage-green-floral-bathroom-wallpaper.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-60613951784685630602024-02-09T05:00:00.004-08:002024-02-10T11:34:50.668-08:00We're on TV! The house's moment of fame<p>I have some very exciting news that I haven't put up here on the blog yet, and it's time. Last summer a film crew came and shot at our house over two and a half days, showing all the projects, pretty vignettes, and family moments in our home. We're now in an episode of <a href="https://amzn.to/47PDDDq" target="_blank">Diary of an Old Home</a>, a charming series on <a href="https://magnolia.com/watch/" target="_blank">Magnolia Network</a>!</p><span></span><h1 style="text-align: left;">Our Diary of an Old Home Episode</h1><p>The production company that makes the show is based out of Portland and found me through Instagram. They wanted to know if I was about done with renovations on the house (I am) and asked for some more photos and info. They ran it by their team and their client at Magnolia, and I passed the test!</p><p>We scheduled filming for a weekend in late June, which gave me time to finish a couple little projects and get things cleaned up. They didn't pay me, but they gave me a small stipend which I used to pay for some landscape cleanup.</p><p>The sunny weekend in June approached and we coordinated schedules--it was mostly outside my work hours but I'd have the kids around, and they would be in some of the shots but we also needed lots of time at the house without them there.</p><p>The first day, only the directory and videographer came to scope things out. They took some test shots and I gave them the tour, and they confirmed which areas they wanted to show the most.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-rQMnL1snMcctWsBX_90WnIk3OaKwmCBz6PpBFZlxd91RizdmV_sLS0Lf8Dn3r8Tw9j6YDnE9SCSt66608L4Wr8dX9UUb2I-oFAe4w_tu0ekoo6mqVIIfQDyx2ZiKy_atUWrxVXDP14A3JBfYu7XNGYkSmXkP9doY0WP4Rt8eSzS0u5lrA1LIn6y7Sxl/s4032/IMG_6646.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm-rQMnL1snMcctWsBX_90WnIk3OaKwmCBz6PpBFZlxd91RizdmV_sLS0Lf8Dn3r8Tw9j6YDnE9SCSt66608L4Wr8dX9UUb2I-oFAe4w_tu0ekoo6mqVIIfQDyx2ZiKy_atUWrxVXDP14A3JBfYu7XNGYkSmXkP9doY0WP4Rt8eSzS0u5lrA1LIn6y7Sxl/s16000/IMG_6646.jpeg"></a></p><p></p><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2024/02/were-on-tv-diary-of-an-old-home.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-60459464558518128432024-01-04T05:00:00.006-08:002024-01-05T09:18:29.760-08:00The pretty projects I did in 2023, and my big ideas for 2024<p>It is very satisfying to look back on what you've done in your home over 12 months. I set <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/search/label/project%20goals" target="_blank">goals every year</a> and do a recap of progress too. Usually each goals post includes a depressing photo of the exterior in early January, some interior in-progress shots, and some inspiration photos. The recap posts have exciting before and afters. You get all of the above in this post since I'm combining recap and goals in one this year. Efficient! </p><h1 style="text-align: left;">Historic house 2023 project recap</h1><p>I started the year with almost no energy for projects, and that wasn't a bad thing. After our separation the prior spring and a tumultuous year and holiday season, a year ago I was feeling like I could really be myself, and didn't really have the energy or time for doing a lot around the house. Instead I went on my first warm weather long weekend vacation (Palm Springs in February with a girlfriend); I made major decisions about my life; I made major progress on my resolutions list like learn to make cocktails, get my tattoos removed, and buy golf clubs. But then this fall I got the bug again and have been pretty busy doing little things around the house and sharing about them <a href="https://www.instagram.com/suzannahstanley/" target="_blank">on Instagram</a>.</p><p>In April I <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/04/dining-room-textured-wallpaper.html" target="_blank">wallpapered the dining room</a>. It was a daunting job but I'm so glad I did it!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi2Pbip7NVefN_BAEHvTAOdQWcU49V3QiwSgG_KNQFIXIpfCkiuMhqAqaBpQrJq-IUsivfyaqufNGCSVYveCPcsdI8oZM_Eo2w0pwmAooyYeSs8LqB4xbkJ60pXjO29WQ1ZwFP33gt52-zIaUCW3bhGuF6mrYbJF1F7T8omu4Ox6vGknfqA1FhlgsdbTsd0" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1066" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi2Pbip7NVefN_BAEHvTAOdQWcU49V3QiwSgG_KNQFIXIpfCkiuMhqAqaBpQrJq-IUsivfyaqufNGCSVYveCPcsdI8oZM_Eo2w0pwmAooyYeSs8LqB4xbkJ60pXjO29WQ1ZwFP33gt52-zIaUCW3bhGuF6mrYbJF1F7T8omu4Ox6vGknfqA1FhlgsdbTsd0=s16000"></a></div><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2024/01/2023-house-project-recap-2024-project-goals.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-49709529046210840362023-12-06T05:00:00.007-08:002023-12-07T12:57:40.040-08:00Full basement renovation is complete! (Enough...) Cost breakdown!<p>Many months ago I shared about our basement renovation plans <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/03/basement-renovation-begins-plans-budget.html" target="_blank">(here)</a>. A 1,100 SF basically unfinished, yucky, cobwebby basement that we, for the first time ever, hired out most of the work to finish to modern standards and add a bathroom to. We finished parts of it (<a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html" target="_blank">bathroom</a>, <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/11/moody-english-inspired-basement-guest-bedroom.html" target="_blank">guest bedroom</a>), but then began our separation and divorce and plans changed, including our use of the basement for a while. </p><p>Now, the basement is basically done, except for some finishing things like paint touch-ups and cleaning up the windows. It's partially in use as a playroom, plus storage, laundry room, furnace room, and lots of storage for my former brother-in-law's stuff. It's not fully presentation-ready but I've had some questions from followers and even neighbors about the cost and extent of the project and wanted to have everything documented!</p><span></span><h1 style="text-align: left;">Historic house full basement remodel cost and updates</h1><p>You can see the full before pics and budget <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/03/basement-renovation-begins-plans-budget.html" target="_blank">here</a>, though that doesn't include everything. You can see my updates in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18281170324037666/" target="_blank">this Instagram story highlight</a> too!</p><p>The first thing we did was the <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/03/earthquake-retrofitting-historic-home.html">earthquake retrofitting</a> (bolting the frame of the house to the concrete foundation), a step necessary on the west coast for older homes not built to current seismic codes. </p><p>Then came framing the new walls, <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html" target="_blank">bathroom work</a> (that post links the progress posts for the bathroom), and drywall. We painted it ourselves which was an awful experience due to the personal stress I had going on at the time... and there is still touch-up to do! But it's done.</p><p>The wall paint color is SW 6227 Meditative by Sherwin-Williams and the trim is a couple shades darker, SW 6228 Refuge. The ceiling is SW 7008 Alabaster (like the white walls, ceilings, and trim in the rest of the house).</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6wdKwgNMUxM4-uEKrYZZcPHDEGw1ywqNH2ZjQD5f3MYMODf8DKT5TzAleQM2d2d5XXC1LwrOaPuQJBlGSRq1pZ_BCJLj7HoGfVvgEbiEqBFCdTYSxs4ZrWpUoNNo_kn-Cc0i065tVSRriWsVKZB3uuUFsCkpuVLpwbRGVZ6jr1uzxajdjp479DMfBC4_Y/s2048/historic%20home%20basement%20renovation%20(5).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6wdKwgNMUxM4-uEKrYZZcPHDEGw1ywqNH2ZjQD5f3MYMODf8DKT5TzAleQM2d2d5XXC1LwrOaPuQJBlGSRq1pZ_BCJLj7HoGfVvgEbiEqBFCdTYSxs4ZrWpUoNNo_kn-Cc0i065tVSRriWsVKZB3uuUFsCkpuVLpwbRGVZ6jr1uzxajdjp479DMfBC4_Y/s16000/historic%20home%20basement%20renovation%20(5).jpg"></a></p><p></p><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/12/full-basement-renovation-is-complete-enough-cost-breakdown.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-12577156914370649322023-11-19T05:00:00.007-08:002023-11-28T15:58:10.774-08:00I painted my bedroom pink! I've been wishing for some updates for my bedroom for quite a while now. I felt too lazy to paint but the white walls were getting reeeeally boring. I redid this room from 2021-2022 and called it done <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/03/our-bedroom-reveal.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It was fine, but minimal (just, with antiques). Since that reveal I've gone through a separation and then divorce and now the room is solely mine, so all the more reason for a feminine update!<div><br></div><div>I'm still working on some big changes in here, but I debated so much over the paint color and ended up mixing it myself and getting it color matched, so wanted to document that here at least! And you can see what a change paint and 2 hours of work on a Sunday did.</div><div><br></div><span></span><div><br></div><h1 style="text-align: left;">Pale peachy pink bedroom makeover</h1><div><br></div><div>I wanted a pink, except those all felt too pink or blue, but a peach felt too 90's. I wanted really pale, though. Adding color to walls is still relatively new to me (my <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/p/room-renos.html" target="_blank">past few room projects</a> have involved colored walls, but always smaller rooms!) and lighter felt more versatile. I got some muddy pink paint cards and chose two and got sample pots at 50% strength. They were still way more saturated than I wanted! I added white paint I had and played around. I added some warm yellow-brown to the pinks (and more white) and made my own color!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KCu0CX3fWQcbsQk7HKGsmXGsEYUT1kMbmssLPcGiTuY4SHrH_qjefyKL480qZlHZpbr44yl6EhiflA9PDrvhY4GNqJRPt65mBxwzdXAP62NGjNp9XnNlBm1BJGcT-8LuW8BNwG__wOuOicFe5QhWBJ57qpNFix5PDGoeJySVzf0p6KFwPDWkCYA9y6RH/s2048/pale%20peachy%20pink%20primary%20attic%20bedroom%20(4).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KCu0CX3fWQcbsQk7HKGsmXGsEYUT1kMbmssLPcGiTuY4SHrH_qjefyKL480qZlHZpbr44yl6EhiflA9PDrvhY4GNqJRPt65mBxwzdXAP62NGjNp9XnNlBm1BJGcT-8LuW8BNwG__wOuOicFe5QhWBJ57qpNFix5PDGoeJySVzf0p6KFwPDWkCYA9y6RH/s16000/pale%20peachy%20pink%20primary%20attic%20bedroom%20(4).jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/11/i-painted-my-bedroom-pink.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-28115199994987254922023-06-05T05:00:00.078-07:002023-06-06T11:09:16.868-07:00Downstairs guest room/office REVEAL!Another room done! I haven't had a guest room in years so this one feels very luxurious (even though it doubles as my work from home office squeezed onto one wall). We've had a few room shuffles since we finished the basement, then Jason moved out, then etc. other changes, but things are getting cleaned up and I have this whole glorious, light-filled room on the main floor to decorate and use.<div><br><span></span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjalJYwurH4NaA4t2DHB8tyn6Waeh5unbLyLFtwf7nM_adc96GSkUXqgLLierxU_ok58kDwEuTEt16Lqq1CBGvQCQWQlgnpw2Rr4OROdreQO5WL1DEbK6kGtnmW8bPpmZ0difpgp5eI47GpQZdFqL8jAMO2pr59ewH6J1vdaN2cnS3O8VEUAEV_NvXaw/s2048/1930s%20Tudor%20revival%20dark%20wood%20trim%20white%20walls%20English%20country%20guest%20bedroom%20office%20(8).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjalJYwurH4NaA4t2DHB8tyn6Waeh5unbLyLFtwf7nM_adc96GSkUXqgLLierxU_ok58kDwEuTEt16Lqq1CBGvQCQWQlgnpw2Rr4OROdreQO5WL1DEbK6kGtnmW8bPpmZ0difpgp5eI47GpQZdFqL8jAMO2pr59ewH6J1vdaN2cnS3O8VEUAEV_NvXaw/s16000/1930s%20Tudor%20revival%20dark%20wood%20trim%20white%20walls%20English%20country%20guest%20bedroom%20office%20(8).jpg"></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br></div></div></div><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/06/tudor-revival-vintage-english-country-guest-room-office.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-64779793047794289742023-04-28T14:00:00.001-07:002023-04-29T21:28:48.518-07:00Wallpaper in the dining room! Just what it needed<p> I'm working on the dining room this spring. New chairs, new rug, different gallery wall, working on replacing the dining table and finding a permanent replacement for the chandelier. The <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2019/03/modern-traditional-dining-room-decor-reveal.html" target="_blank">dining room</a> was the first room I "finished" in this house in 2018-2019 and aside from changing the rug a couple times and adding to the sideboards, it was still that "modern traditional" look I was doing here at first and not my current style. </p><p>The new chairs, rug, etc. helped but it was still looking really plain. We have the original wood trim in here and I struggle with what paint colors would look good with it, but am also not planning to paint it. So... how to add more interest? Wallpaper!!</p><p><i>Thanks to <a href="https://www.brewsterwallcovering.com/" target="_blank">Brewster</a> for providing this wallpaper for my review.</i></p><p>I have some patterned curtains in here that I love, so wanted either a very small pattern or just a texture that wouldn't compete. So I have some goals for myself (take 3 fun vacations with friends, get my tattoos removed, learn to make cocktails), and the house stuff will have to fit into the happier lifestyle I'm trying to create for myself. </p><p>Part of that means hiring out some projects when I'm able. Partly that will also mean making small changes when they feel fun, like adding pieces that represent the style I've been working on identifying this past year. </p><p><br></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Fixer upper renovation project goals for 2023</h2><div><br></div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Exterior</h4><p>I had this on my list last year but talked myself out of it... I want to paint the brick. I've gone back and forth a lot on this one and it's a harder choice since this is a somewhat historic house (1937), but... the bricks and mortar are not in good shape and cleaning them has not been successful. I need to tuck point/re-mortar in places and then I'd like to have all of the brick painted the same color as the siding. I think it will really clean up the look of the front and give the house a less shabby feel overall.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSBzjWVv-Kacba7ij8mxK3DSgLupO9BJWwUOvGtoq6OMNz_U8AYBO-snSGsNvXimwWQhrCrBYmwA7ua4I-pfXrGtZZdrBVf7tYI7MnA-6wJYmM56jDQAinr9ovZphlroCq7rxT5_2C3po9EFXzfKyihdGIYMY13C-ZRldSAwU5J8geiq5XLzmgZof6tA/s2000/exterior%20front%20with%20grass.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSBzjWVv-Kacba7ij8mxK3DSgLupO9BJWwUOvGtoq6OMNz_U8AYBO-snSGsNvXimwWQhrCrBYmwA7ua4I-pfXrGtZZdrBVf7tYI7MnA-6wJYmM56jDQAinr9ovZphlroCq7rxT5_2C3po9EFXzfKyihdGIYMY13C-ZRldSAwU5J8geiq5XLzmgZof6tA/s16000/exterior%20front%20with%20grass.jpg"></a></p><p>In the backyard, I hope to get it cleaned up (ended up storing a lot of garden stuff for various reasons) and hopefully remove the garden area, just make it lawn.</p><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/01/2023-house-project-goals.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-17147587137613127552023-01-02T05:00:00.047-08:002023-01-04T12:05:57.301-08:002022 home project recapI majorly paused home projects and blogging and Instagramming in 2022 due to an unexpected divorce (hard) and finally learning to take care of myself and choose fun and rest over needless productivity (good). We moved into this house in July of 2018 and have been working on it since, with not a lot of breaks. It's currently very comfortable and adequate, with a few unfinished or under-improved areas, but I am so grateful for it as it is, a wonderful home for me and my children.<div><br></div><div>I did get several fun projects done this year (somehow), though. Here they are.</div><div></div><div><br></div><h1 style="text-align: left;">2022 Tudor revival home projects</h1><div><br></div><div>Here's my <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2021/12/2022-house-project-and-design-goals.html" target="_blank">list of house project goals for 2022</a>. I definitely did not do all of those... but I did a good job of picking the highest priority/most important to me ones.</div><div><br></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Exterior</h2><div><br></div><div>The biggest deal thing on the exterior this year was replacing the front window. Read about that <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/10/historic-home-statement-front-window-replacement.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Very expensive, long lead time, kind of sad on an old house, but very much needed! So glad I did that.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgpVfdJLx_6vfYA_qBR058uSjY8DXDh5a63TGFfP6hboxDkLT_IQ03IOjPGJdSFoNEMR76pXX-CUOWfLhRE1TUn1UcJEFP4NZW9vGF5iTUp96jVMURpW8mlaqEJSerjJXsOpuAtHJhy9o4aMoHw1MEmZVr1nr_DCycLoyEWXJz-hKLtaZgxodIagWhVmA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1066" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgpVfdJLx_6vfYA_qBR058uSjY8DXDh5a63TGFfP6hboxDkLT_IQ03IOjPGJdSFoNEMR76pXX-CUOWfLhRE1TUn1UcJEFP4NZW9vGF5iTUp96jVMURpW8mlaqEJSerjJXsOpuAtHJhy9o4aMoHw1MEmZVr1nr_DCycLoyEWXJz-hKLtaZgxodIagWhVmA=s16000"></a></div></div><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2023/01/2022-home-project-recap.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-60959741073340318252022-11-19T05:00:00.126-08:002022-11-20T21:03:04.430-08:00Moody English-inspired basement guest bedroom REVEAL! + costs and sources<p>Hooray, my <a href="https://www.oneroomchallenge.com/" target="_blank">One Room Challenge</a> is done! I 100% did not have time or capacity to do this project (hence the lack of blog posts long the way, unlike how I've done <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/search/label/One%20Room%20Challenge" target="_blank">my previous ORCs</a>) but I have to say it turned out great and I'm so glad I did it!!</p><h1 style="text-align: left;">Moody English-inspired basement guest bedroom</h1><p>This room is part of <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/search/label/basement" target="_blank">my big basement renovation</a> which unfortunately is still not 100% done--though now this room is, as is the bathroom right next to it (my spring One Room Challenge--<a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html" target="_blank">reveal here</a>). It lets in tons of sun in the morning (it faces east) and a good amount of light most of the time. It's a great!! But it had a lot of issues. Almost all the windows on my 1937 home are original wood windows, including some leaded glass ones. They are very cool and help the house keep its original character. But this window was failing in several ways. </p><p>When we <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2018/07/before-tour-stanley-tudor-revived.html#/" target="_blank">first bought the house</a> this window was on the long list of overwhelming expensive projects/updates, and it fell to near the bottom of the list. But now with two kids and using the space in front of the window for their playmat and climber, and with a lot of other projects crossed off, it felt like it really needed to happen. </p><p>Take a look... leaded glass panes including four fins in the middle, which were no longer welded together. At the top someone had tried to secure them with wood and screws, but the glass literally moved when you pushed on it slightly, and rattled in strong wind. There was also a lot of water damage on the sill and floor below. (And cat hair--but hard to dust with the varnish worn off from water damage!)</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFTzsKQxdYDRtbaWrQ-0AeKB7XiToGOjhKaH21YTnfmcDLyrinzDmTnk5qPsBwoC_lEkpZE7jraRNID_tENRNPb-l8fzI5TZvC56MPbFjvs-ypTPq3awTtFwHij65AT4g1ArNUTVKVcCiNkfgnLuKmF1gapcq7cL2ezxEtoiJJ3TRjChh6LllnazOG8w/s2000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(2).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFTzsKQxdYDRtbaWrQ-0AeKB7XiToGOjhKaH21YTnfmcDLyrinzDmTnk5qPsBwoC_lEkpZE7jraRNID_tENRNPb-l8fzI5TZvC56MPbFjvs-ypTPq3awTtFwHij65AT4g1ArNUTVKVcCiNkfgnLuKmF1gapcq7cL2ezxEtoiJJ3TRjChh6LllnazOG8w/s16000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(2).jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZHsQouyJh6kP0v5ajFsazGat4Lh4_JScfMbl5uRN2EykD32287gYxi3T2_pXRCJaMoe8gGuDjCRmsrs80M073hi6zmHKYsBef3MlvP_V2MGtHzNAGsgyg8spBlDv_PMLM_8wo2uraZ6vFqOP0ohxveZ9EHA8zYX7NVguF7QOPifxKUhRu2tb_nox8Lg/s2000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(6).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZHsQouyJh6kP0v5ajFsazGat4Lh4_JScfMbl5uRN2EykD32287gYxi3T2_pXRCJaMoe8gGuDjCRmsrs80M073hi6zmHKYsBef3MlvP_V2MGtHzNAGsgyg8spBlDv_PMLM_8wo2uraZ6vFqOP0ohxveZ9EHA8zYX7NVguF7QOPifxKUhRu2tb_nox8Lg/s320/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(6).jpg" width="320"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAGxbQXLPXV2CXN4k6kLoAlZHsEzxLKDypcTFwAL6ivm5z9OdF_jGNEqlJW_Yh97yr8eqgoBn8s48i3OPu9XfpcmmcGgSd5JNg2HFntpWgPAFkdQr4aVcf42AZGAhH3lD98zdtuOw8jwNuWYKU9qvFkpKCGzwGyKw9f-RuLOrIIZJwVvt_XzXl0qbHIg/s2000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(4).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAGxbQXLPXV2CXN4k6kLoAlZHsEzxLKDypcTFwAL6ivm5z9OdF_jGNEqlJW_Yh97yr8eqgoBn8s48i3OPu9XfpcmmcGgSd5JNg2HFntpWgPAFkdQr4aVcf42AZGAhH3lD98zdtuOw8jwNuWYKU9qvFkpKCGzwGyKw9f-RuLOrIIZJwVvt_XzXl0qbHIg/s320/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(4).jpg" width="320"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfga9A9nfeitEyqu5-R8GmhVUj2Tp5IkQa0i6PDxN2kaG3EDIilc7HhpobeWkbnLeipJS6TyeV5GaM-Y72sVTyj69Hs_-897i4SFjMh-iXgAMzJJ-TMxm7SKQlPWc3iQzzaL_goTjAzGi8eH7Gd3SZZiPaiGqQrCmDxQ9ieXFNLS3oPVTJqbvH6r87AA/s2000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(5).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfga9A9nfeitEyqu5-R8GmhVUj2Tp5IkQa0i6PDxN2kaG3EDIilc7HhpobeWkbnLeipJS6TyeV5GaM-Y72sVTyj69Hs_-897i4SFjMh-iXgAMzJJ-TMxm7SKQlPWc3iQzzaL_goTjAzGi8eH7Gd3SZZiPaiGqQrCmDxQ9ieXFNLS3oPVTJqbvH6r87AA/s320/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(5).jpg" width="320"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirV3UhBMl2BZw2cX1XQSOxsAfqbKtFq6d3AXtkw6e3JkdRaj-K7qj5911G8WZcPqJuhF2QTsgIZ9pvqeNcsjj1FpGu1MCW5bkPsORRuX-NLcGZsv2VyGZGxzhIf_2AXq2HIMjc_6VF-cTWVE7JKZfafRNbBSuOFuTbQljfkAmG6kjFaU2y5_hl7gbL4w/s2000/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(3).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirV3UhBMl2BZw2cX1XQSOxsAfqbKtFq6d3AXtkw6e3JkdRaj-K7qj5911G8WZcPqJuhF2QTsgIZ9pvqeNcsjj1FpGu1MCW5bkPsORRuX-NLcGZsv2VyGZGxzhIf_2AXq2HIMjc_6VF-cTWVE7JKZfafRNbBSuOFuTbQljfkAmG6kjFaU2y5_hl7gbL4w/s320/leaded%20glass%20picture%20window%20before%20(3).jpg" width="240"></a></div><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/10/historic-home-statement-front-window-replacement.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-33480014325146501142022-09-28T05:00:00.048-07:002022-09-29T07:31:27.407-07:00English-inspired guest room makeover, week 1 One Room Challenge!I need a kick in the pants to wrap up <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/search/label/basement" target="_blank">this big basement renovation</a> project, so here goes--my 117th (kidding) <a href="https://www.oneroomchallenge.com/" target="_blank">One Room Challenge</a>. But I have plans for a beautiful, richly colored, vintage-ey English country-inspired room and here I go!<span></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvz2yyC_yZPPkMudRUC1VCUpqzwSBRNBgggflMzc9Tkhgmdx4BMqhZL7TQf69SUN1alqilyRgsFJ_EQWWMh7xOyD_e1CnWVHdJc7RI0utqinO1VQKtzfrOQX5mcSgJUlHFNDdrfs6IBvUEsdvSZD2QAY8nxF2JAT25POCl983oGsi42b2ns52RuIgRUg/s2000/modern%20English%20country%20inspired%20guest%20room%20mood%20board.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvz2yyC_yZPPkMudRUC1VCUpqzwSBRNBgggflMzc9Tkhgmdx4BMqhZL7TQf69SUN1alqilyRgsFJ_EQWWMh7xOyD_e1CnWVHdJc7RI0utqinO1VQKtzfrOQX5mcSgJUlHFNDdrfs6IBvUEsdvSZD2QAY8nxF2JAT25POCl983oGsi42b2ns52RuIgRUg/s16000/modern%20English%20country%20inspired%20guest%20room%20mood%20board.jpg"></a></div><div><br></div><h1 style="text-align: left;">Basement guest room One Room Challenge makeover</h1><div><br></div><h4 style="text-align: left;">The before(s)</h4><div><br></div><div>This room has been through a lot. Here's its recent history, from 70's/80's home office to newly framed tiny bonus room. There's no closet since it wasn't intended to be a bedroom (hence why we didn't add an egress window), and it's really very small. A full size bed is as big as you'd want to go! I was thinking it would be a nice office, too, or music room or small playroom... but then we decided we wanted it to be a guest room, and I love decorating bedrooms so that was the most fun option anyway. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUtovXnADFWBJfeKnXoF1fKJcLLRaMmBBFGEYb_qrSjksFTL3rzRdglJahkGB3o9Q9YT2we0vj5fSl1f_SeBlcICkEggZbDqqiKcTkEqQovcen8lZ6fQ48iST1MuFzhBUlQZnBZQo82pI8LrGpqqm0EYi2yqo2lu4tF6fH8Cmme_zbwE1uS01wTQ1aoA/s2000/basement%20guest%20room%20before%20(3).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUtovXnADFWBJfeKnXoF1fKJcLLRaMmBBFGEYb_qrSjksFTL3rzRdglJahkGB3o9Q9YT2we0vj5fSl1f_SeBlcICkEggZbDqqiKcTkEqQovcen8lZ6fQ48iST1MuFzhBUlQZnBZQo82pI8LrGpqqm0EYi2yqo2lu4tF6fH8Cmme_zbwE1uS01wTQ1aoA/s320/basement%20guest%20room%20before%20(3).jpg" width="320"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/09/english-inspired-guest-room-makeover-ORC-week-1.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-73816239731209538612022-09-24T10:45:00.004-07:002022-09-25T14:08:41.172-07:00Thrifted and vintage gallery wall living room update<p>We have a long, skinny living room and the wall opposite the front door/entry has always stumped me. We tried the TV there, tried a wall of bookcases (looked so cluttered)... no good solution. Until recently, when I got some new toy storage cabinets. They were really low and needed a big statement <i>something</i> above them, but I'm a little tired of really big art pieces and wanted something cozier. </p><p>So I gathered a few pieces of art I already had and started buying coordinating frames at Goodwills. I started with the largest piece and just built outward from there. </p><span></span><p>I "framed" out the gallery wall even before I had all the art pieces, and had empty frames hanging for a couple months! Even that felt better than the heavy wall of bookcases (we put them in the basement media room now that the <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/search/label/basement" target="_blank">basement</a> is almost done).</p><p>Then, I had four empty frames I needed to fill and I shopped around some of my favorite sources for original art downloads (I highly recommend the <a href="https://ahomeisannounced.com/public-domain-print-shop/" target="_blank">Public Domain Print Shop from A Home Is Announced</a>). I picked out some landscapes and some sketches that worked well with each other and the other art pieces. I printed them at Office Depot on 110 lb paper for about $1 each. Frames at the Goodwills in my area are usually $2-5 each. I would guess the total cost of this wall was about $40! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp8JUqGGAYQNdhKPA1x5JzJqg8WBqYOVpkr0XV-kqsU0tgm4c9DFeWynwiCCRj30JTjE68oxpgYrDUX-oD7n5DImKMfrn12LWSk-Z1IXZXunRvsGjEU1xRc_RjJ7sBIiXN2HBalpLULoMCozHcUM7xHgPlJipIwSYTX-1X5ayzF4p5pjS6c-mmN3aYbA/s2048/thrifted%20gallery%20wall%20(5).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp8JUqGGAYQNdhKPA1x5JzJqg8WBqYOVpkr0XV-kqsU0tgm4c9DFeWynwiCCRj30JTjE68oxpgYrDUX-oD7n5DImKMfrn12LWSk-Z1IXZXunRvsGjEU1xRc_RjJ7sBIiXN2HBalpLULoMCozHcUM7xHgPlJipIwSYTX-1X5ayzF4p5pjS6c-mmN3aYbA/s16000/thrifted%20gallery%20wall%20(5).jpg"></a></div><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/09/thrifted-and-vintage-gallery-wall.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-70913195560770725232022-08-29T05:00:00.063-07:002022-08-30T06:56:03.929-07:00Living room update: new custom ottoman, coffee table solution!<p>I said back <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2021/12/2022-house-project-and-design-goals.html#/" target="_blank">at the beginning of the year that a goal for my home</a> was figuring out the living room. I knew it would probably take all year! I've been updating the curtains, creating attractive toy/book storage, moving things around... and the custom ottoman I ordered a while back is here and so wonderful!</p><p><i>This post is sponsored by <a href="https://bit.ly/3KogmhC" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wayfair</a>.</i></p><h1 style="text-align: left;">Coffee table replacement: upholstered ottoman</h1><p>I've debated a lot about coffee tables in here and tried a couple out. I love the function and style-ability of a coffee table, but with little kids, we had to just keep it bare all the time and it was sort of a hazard for rough play. There is also already a lot of wood in this room due to the original wood trim. Plus, I like to put my feet up on the coffee table while watching TV and I was always putting a pillow under my heels for padding, ha.</p><p>So a while back I decided I wanted something traditional, comfortable, and unique. I found <a href="https://bit.ly/3AS2adR" rel="sponsored" target="_blank">this upholstered ottoman on Wayfair</a> that comes in a ton of beautiful patterns and has charming ball feet. It was perfect! I was able to choose the color of the feet, too. Ah, I love some of those stripes it comes in so much... it was a hard decision! I recommend ordering swatches!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl0_aiVNikZO7gvaTYjPXZymyjPquWrPbxwPsfB9S94aqo1XCyyNow4-616cdPscV6cpDE-n4reekwC5en14j-i0hBKj8jn-t_JTsNqCZ1X-CQ8va_xfbEvqsRkzUkx-DL-r6WYLqAEcA3Ket9PoFpMk7PFD-L1-NP6ond_GjSwF3s_JWmF9DdYzRihg/s2048/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(1).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl0_aiVNikZO7gvaTYjPXZymyjPquWrPbxwPsfB9S94aqo1XCyyNow4-616cdPscV6cpDE-n4reekwC5en14j-i0hBKj8jn-t_JTsNqCZ1X-CQ8va_xfbEvqsRkzUkx-DL-r6WYLqAEcA3Ket9PoFpMk7PFD-L1-NP6ond_GjSwF3s_JWmF9DdYzRihg/s16000/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(1).jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglvuDvpet6MzKCAutqwEYtmI1G4cCAoGL4CWujeMRrIpamnrcSHfEqHpkX3zfYCmkW7AVOzgNaqMJ-wXZpGygQLi0BsMduANQSHG5T0xvCrhWnGoP37AAPAxK4KmyFOd-91EGtJvLprnBaWUL5rBE5voW9IrfICakYHwUV-WXc1yo2STItjjPM1YKlpA/s2048/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(7).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglvuDvpet6MzKCAutqwEYtmI1G4cCAoGL4CWujeMRrIpamnrcSHfEqHpkX3zfYCmkW7AVOzgNaqMJ-wXZpGygQLi0BsMduANQSHG5T0xvCrhWnGoP37AAPAxK4KmyFOd-91EGtJvLprnBaWUL5rBE5voW9IrfICakYHwUV-WXc1yo2STItjjPM1YKlpA/s320/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(7).jpg" width="240"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpIwO5CoZd6kjjxIKesWmnPeSVPXkPPkU6XOYQla-iYMvMriTpXd8Sq-8dmGkbU_Qt0STBEiyvzImbqrbSkgxq-Ea2Zr00qN_Bzaz4-MOU5VgG1EteA3okDIrSKmtHBG-iYuiFR5G1DYrLa_YjfdP-rpUy7Xp4Mv8rpCiO8MEvYzZf-yLqENKRiKr_GA/s2048/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(2).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpIwO5CoZd6kjjxIKesWmnPeSVPXkPPkU6XOYQla-iYMvMriTpXd8Sq-8dmGkbU_Qt0STBEiyvzImbqrbSkgxq-Ea2Zr00qN_Bzaz4-MOU5VgG1EteA3okDIrSKmtHBG-iYuiFR5G1DYrLa_YjfdP-rpUy7Xp4Mv8rpCiO8MEvYzZf-yLqENKRiKr_GA/s320/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(2).jpg" width="213"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB69nV1y3pVaG8HV4XdOrbqPFm0zKW1FkWFz9oSc1mYMg2v6oNybNre8tGJ7-_hbebFP7CoNO0CJTMT7Z8Y1f9LMiN1l8KHuTN7TiACyZHpWLGZAbB1_5vP-BrSWXy9KxmYsRbb1rgVKfaWUi9xD86dZ39lfpOvldQgd_8TUz_0dtysZ9mNBRibk9yQ/s2048/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(3).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB69nV1y3pVaG8HV4XdOrbqPFm0zKW1FkWFz9oSc1mYMg2v6oNybNre8tGJ7-_hbebFP7CoNO0CJTMT7Z8Y1f9LMiN1l8KHuTN7TiACyZHpWLGZAbB1_5vP-BrSWXy9KxmYsRbb1rgVKfaWUi9xD86dZ39lfpOvldQgd_8TUz_0dtysZ9mNBRibk9yQ/s320/custom%20upholstered%20ottoman%20instead%20of%20coffee%20table%20in%20tudor%20revival%20living%20room%20(3).jpg" width="213"></a></div><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/08/living-room-update-custom-ottoman-sponsored.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-6885139112524542982022-07-16T05:00:00.002-07:002022-07-17T21:11:42.919-07:00Old house small closet update!<p>I did a <a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2021/03/one-weekend-closet-repair-and-reveal.html" target="_blank">closet project last year</a>--I repaired the walls and reconfigured things in a medium-sized somewhat funky hall closet that I used as mine. That worked great but it was down the hall from our room... we recently switched things around and now I get the closet and dresser in the bedroom. It was built similarly and apparently 1937 closets often need some of the same updates. I recently made this closet way more functional, too! </p><p>This was a simple project that I mostly did right after the kids went to bed over a few days. Check it out!</p><p><br></p><h1 style="text-align: left;">Old house closet update</h1><p>Here's my clothing storage corner of the room. It's not just to hide unattractive plumbing; it can add so much charm and softness to an otherwise standard-feeling bathroom. I added a floral block print sink skirt to the pedestal sink in our <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html" target="_blank">recent basement bathroom project</a> and it made it so much more fun!</p><p>I started my sink skirt journey by turning two shower curtains into sink skirts for my friend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/ciarakenaston/" target="_blank">@ciarakenaston</a>. It was a genius idea of hers--clearance <a href="https://bit.ly/3bfCjlN" target="_blank">West Elm Heather Taylor Home</a> big gingham shower curtains, sturdy fabric and great colors. You can see the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17901252530456208/" target="_blank">stories here</a> and the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CXtZtZbFpoK/" target="_blank">finished product here</a>. </p><p>Making a sink skirt from a shower curtain is by far easier than what I did for our bathroom. I highly recommend that shortcut route! They come hemmed on all three sides; all you have to do is add a casing at the top for elastic or gathering and attach it with velcro. But if you want to pick your fabric (even use a lighter weight fabric) and make something totally custom... this tutorial will tell you how!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFh0NXiFezmcUMnZW4T8yM_PN6UcDemhecVH88KvVdqu9b_V-G0mFYdZuqtaw71AHFKM1P8b8cR16-AQW11TbI22djman8JDErkRaMGMFkrof23ZLrSFNVxY1AHXnxmAExEoBSLotoncY_cEGt8EtUeXxT1OyUQN76-AspcYZy_OCdgbwCxbyVNuiWCg/s2048/English%20country%20inspired%20guest%20bathroom%20reveal%20(2).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFh0NXiFezmcUMnZW4T8yM_PN6UcDemhecVH88KvVdqu9b_V-G0mFYdZuqtaw71AHFKM1P8b8cR16-AQW11TbI22djman8JDErkRaMGMFkrof23ZLrSFNVxY1AHXnxmAExEoBSLotoncY_cEGt8EtUeXxT1OyUQN76-AspcYZy_OCdgbwCxbyVNuiWCg/s16000/English%20country%20inspired%20guest%20bathroom%20reveal%20(2).jpg"></a></p><h1 style="text-align: left;">Sink Skirt Tutorial</h1><div><br></div><h4 style="text-align: left;">You will need:</h4><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>3-4 yards fabric of choice</li><li>3-4 yards lining fabric, if using a lighter weight fabric</li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/3zSWtMy" target="_blank">Adhesive hook and loop tape</a></li></ul>

I spent a couple of evenings listening to Taylor Swift and hanging wallpaper instead of relaxing on the couch like I wanted... but it's done!</p><p>The wallpaper is <a href="https://www.astreetprints.com/2999-14026-niki-beige-country-kitsch-wallpaper/2999-14026" target="_blank">this pretty one from A Street Prints</a> (sponsored). But we did spray these beadboard panels flat on the ground which was 1000x faster than the brush-and-roll method for beadboard. We'll touch them up once they're installed. I picked out art today too so wanted to visualize it and brought the beadboard in and leaned them up against the walls. With sources and budget</a></li></ul><div><br /></div><h1>Bathroom Progress</h1><p>The drywall and the rest of the basement is completely done (and the very light/smooth texture is beautiful)! We had to wait for the initial plumbing and electrical inspections before drywalling the bathroom itself, but we’ve passed those now. I am taking today off work to get as far as I can painting the basement and getting ready to install some beadboard, and then once that’s done and the drywall is done over the weekend I’m hoping to paint and install beadboard in the bathroom!</p><div>Here’s the current status!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhkhHOWsKsxLUw2GeduzxFcyAAaei2nK8-dE-o4tNcJkDBRn1_TTz9uOc3keOFBVT2cBB7TQSLy9JIUjoKebJuBc_CoD3d7fp4T5wx6c9aBBVW7Wsxaqe9p7Sgn40E1fA0SCA4slfK308ZRIZl_PFWV0Z_07y_ZU6LhMWFiXqqEntF-L2aCvj1zzOjQ/s2000/bathroom%20with%20tub%20and%20drywall.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhkhHOWsKsxLUw2GeduzxFcyAAaei2nK8-dE-o4tNcJkDBRn1_TTz9uOc3keOFBVT2cBB7TQSLy9JIUjoKebJuBc_CoD3d7fp4T5wx6c9aBBVW7Wsxaqe9p7Sgn40E1fA0SCA4slfK308ZRIZl_PFWV0Z_07y_ZU6LhMWFiXqqEntF-L2aCvj1zzOjQ/s16000/bathroom%20with%20tub%20and%20drywall.jpg" /></a></div><br />I’m also still making design decisions… leaning toward this look and colors. I have some wallpaper samples for the upper half of the walls; nothing is looking perfect but I think I can make one of them work… I am going for sort of a bold look with a dark keyboard on the bottom and a lighter wallpaper, that doesn’t necessarily have a lot of color the same as the beadboard. ORC Week 2<p>Things are moving along in the basement bathroom (part of the 8-week<span> </span><a href="http://oneroomchallenge.com" target="_blank">One Room Challenge</a>), and I got to do something I’ve never done before: decide on the placement of the electrical work! </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/beautiful-basement-bathroom-plans.html" target="_blank">Week 1: Design, plans, and before photos</a></li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/choosing-electrical-locations-for-our.html" target="_blank">Week 2: Choosing electrical locations and sconce placement</a></li><li>No post week 3</li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/it-looks-like-bathroom-week-4-orc.html" target="_blank">Week 4: Tub, drywall, and design</a></li><li>No posts weeks 5-6</li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/wallpaper-tile-beadboard-and-door-major-bathroom-progress.html" target="_blank">Week 7: Tile, beadboard, and door</a></li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html#/" target="_blank">Week 8: The REVEAL! Part of that is necessity because the ceiling is very low! But it’s really the best place for flattering, helpful lighting when using the mirror.</p><p>I had to do some math, diagramming, Google research, and actually laying it out to determine how high the sconces should go and how far away from the mirror. Thankfully I already had the sconces, mirror, and sink on site and was able to get pretty close with my research and then lay the sconces out next to the mirror on the floor to see that I needed to account for some room for the shades!<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3I-qaZZrzr3E6XBdG15C2IU4f7gKfuNiY9thug652hzd2wZyH6mafyIl7hiF0cxppy3G0pE0S4N6Dlq71e7iVsBxMwV0uRqRore7JJQe60CFM8s4SGUalmFEowqXOJDCeLsQF1wqGqwM4JqGgVkAeV7_6_hf13qHpurg4_ibQeCsHqGFwbiCEaDIc-A/s2000/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(2).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3I-qaZZrzr3E6XBdG15C2IU4f7gKfuNiY9thug652hzd2wZyH6mafyIl7hiF0cxppy3G0pE0S4N6Dlq71e7iVsBxMwV0uRqRore7JJQe60CFM8s4SGUalmFEowqXOJDCeLsQF1wqGqwM4JqGgVkAeV7_6_hf13qHpurg4_ibQeCsHqGFwbiCEaDIc-A/s16000/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(2).jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBKOFaOQ5sNE72DjrP80xeI4ufwY87-pj41FHgLHeeLzpTmUxo_eGdh1B01-CjGTRf0wEvJm-31R7J4KvakjlQhNiXw18cmi2cb3QDETtir_37WRufw0CNqeUI2nftDczmTbUJhJSeroF42FLsJaFdz0nVC5a27RubNet_trQLg5ylopSu4oEPRzHyw/s2000/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(3).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBKOFaOQ5sNE72DjrP80xeI4ufwY87-pj41FHgLHeeLzpTmUxo_eGdh1B01-CjGTRf0wEvJm-31R7J4KvakjlQhNiXw18cmi2cb3QDETtir_37WRufw0CNqeUI2nftDczmTbUJhJSeroF42FLsJaFdz0nVC5a27RubNet_trQLg5ylopSu4oEPRzHyw/s320/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(3).jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>60" is pretty low for sconces, but we have a low ceiling. We decided on 62" up from the floor and 5" out from the mirror. That will put the sconces 28" apart, which is closer than what you see above a big vanity with a big mirror, but will actually be great lighting. I looked through my Pinterest bathroom pins for examples of sconces above pedestal sinks and quickly realized I don't need to worry about the relationship of the sconces to the sink width. It doesn't matter that they don't line up to the center or edge of the sconces or sink.</div><div><br /></div><div>The electrician talked to me about where the switches, etc. would go and we decided on lighting locations, and then he got to wiring everything. You can see in this photo of the boxes are set, and there are wires to where the sconces will go (above the sink plumbing).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBKVDy4syhwaswrGTwgV0OJ3BBuhzueWpe3A8LqQ5C345WlUu_sB9__1M-MiWE0WwCaUPqR8WMNrJYG_-t7ZDyohX-peyEvgbJFb3G_J4kJ7JECp9CNdvluYdUAvZ4RoFbeacEOaXUNavozHUFjXvi8tBi8GsYnlkJoC5jAZ6TL_v9L2HP62QDKZLDXA/s2000/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(1).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBKVDy4syhwaswrGTwgV0OJ3BBuhzueWpe3A8LqQ5C345WlUu_sB9__1M-MiWE0WwCaUPqR8WMNrJYG_-t7ZDyohX-peyEvgbJFb3G_J4kJ7JECp9CNdvluYdUAvZ4RoFbeacEOaXUNavozHUFjXvi8tBi8GsYnlkJoC5jAZ6TL_v9L2HP62QDKZLDXA/s320/bathroom%20sconce%20placement%20(1).jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>There will be an outlet to the right of the sink, and as you can see the switch is handy by the door frame. The door swings in and will open up toward the wall to the left.</div><div><br />Drywall goes up soon, and the tub will be installed soon, so it will start to look like a bathroom any day now.<br /><br />Even though this phase is not all that beautiful, I am particularly enjoying it because I don’t have to do any of the work! I might not be as cheerful in a few weeks when I’ve been painting and installing bead board and tile. And the importance of proper prep<p>I did it! I painted our breakfast nook, which involved not only a lot of edging (so many windows!) but also sanding and priming to fix some texture issues on the walls. Our house is from the 1930's and the plaster is in pretty good shape most places (that is, where it wasn't wallpapered then painted over that so who knows), but there were a ton of paint drips in this breakfast nook, and some all-directions brush strokes that bugged me. </p><p>I sanded, primed, and added one even coat of a beautiful, rich paint color and... it's a new space!</p><p><i>Thanks to <a href="https://www.kilz.com/" target="_blank">KILZ®</a> for sponsoring this post!</i></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0Vv7UApceJGxmbsx5msuSDMMzgCypHNaC2q-vKodCvZjkbZ8eMblOXSfMHmvsME2o5swjIR5Sb58x14XfMUHSOut_NfOxGFXW2W0x2hTaLXmWaI9zCsAwWdP8P0t7g6bLKrQOyUsNnT4DkQVOFXNmVqU0pCcJeYE1B9kdEsE0xWflzkbcQYvLtzBX3A=s2048" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj0Vv7UApceJGxmbsx5msuSDMMzgCypHNaC2q-vKodCvZjkbZ8eMblOXSfMHmvsME2o5swjIR5Sb58x14XfMUHSOut_NfOxGFXW2W0x2hTaLXmWaI9zCsAwWdP8P0t7g6bLKrQOyUsNnT4DkQVOFXNmVqU0pCcJeYE1B9kdEsE0xWflzkbcQYvLtzBX3A=s16000"></a></p><span></span><a href="https://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/breakfast-nook-paint-reveal-and.html#more">READ POST</a>Create/Enjoy (@suzannahstanley)http://www.blogger.com/profile/02455362200388614480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5757733747822094075.post-5385763219980988232022-04-06T05:00:00.007-07:002022-05-30T14:57:33.745-07:00Beautiful basement bathroom from scratch! ORC Week 1<p>We are in the middle of our biggest house project yet, and it’s stressful and hard and expensive BUT! I get to design some really pretty rooms from scratch! We are <a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/03/basement-renovation-begins-plans-budget.html" target="_blank">renovating our 1,200 SF basement</a> including adding a full bathroom. It’s also our first project not doing almost everything ourselves, so thankfully I have a contractor, drywaller, electrician, and plumber doing the heavy lifting and I’ll be doing DIYs like tiling the floor and painting. (And decor!) I’m still figuring it out but I’m excited to share these design ideas with you. And the before photos and floorplan of the space!</p><p>I'll be sharing this bathroom as part of the 8-week <a href="http://oneroomchallenge.com" target="_blank">One Room Challenge</a>!</p><ul><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/beautiful-basement-bathroom-plans.html" target="_blank">Week 1: Design, plans, and before photos</a></li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/choosing-electrical-locations-for-our.html" target="_blank">Week 2: Choosing electrical locations and sconce placement</a></li><li>No post week 3</li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/04/it-looks-like-bathroom-week-4-orc.html" target="_blank">Week 4: Tub, drywall, and design</a></li><li>No posts weeks 5-6</li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/wallpaper-tile-beadboard-and-door-major-bathroom-progress.html" target="_blank">Week 7: Tile, beadboard, and door</a></li><li><a href="http://www.create-enjoy.com/2022/05/english-country-inspired-basement-bathroom-reveal.html#/" target="_blank">Week 8: The REVEAL!
